Operating as usual
This was the end of our final class at Point of Rocks Martial Arts. A very heart breaking moment closing the door on this chapter of our lives. I want to thank everyone that has made our little dojo so special. Remember a bump in the road does not make the end of a journey.
This decision has absolutely devastated me and I have tried every possible way to make it work. Due to the lack of space for sufficient social distancing that is required to be open, significant increased cost to do business, increased strain on my family, and not knowing when this will conclude. I am heartbroken to announce Point of Rocks Martial Arts will be closing due to COVID19. We tried to get a bigger space with the limited resources to accommodate more students but the available spaces will not work for what we need. We have been through so much the last few years growing together, training together, and learning from each other. I hope after this is all over and things return to some normalcy that we can reopen at a new location and train together once again. Our final class will be Thursday July 30th. Please call me with any questions and concerns.
Students and parents. I am looking at crunching numbers. I need a count of students that are returning and/or planning to return before Aug 1st. Can you let me know as soon as possible by Facebook, email or phone. We have an opportunity to move to a larger space. (almost 3 times larger). I want to make sure we are all on the same page because moving forward without the student base will cause the dojo to close. Staying in the same small space will also cause the dojo to close because of lack of size and social distancing. We also may be switching the strongly recommended students wear a mask to required. What is everyone's thoughts on this?
Great news!! We are opening back up July 6th. I look forward to training with everyone again. We are taking precautions and following Maryland's procedures and guidelines for reopening. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Our schedule can be found at http://www.porocksma.com/schedule.html. I can be reached at [email protected] or 304-860-9022

CLEANING THE FLOOR – PREPARE FOR CLASS
In the western society, “cleaning” is seen as a low paid job, with not much respect for the person who does the job. However in Zen-Buddhism, cleaning is an extremely important activity before you are even allowed to participate in class and practice the particular art (Karate, Iaido etc). The floor is the most dusty part of the room, so you must clean the floor first. Then clean the lamps and sculptures and paintings etc too, the entire room must be clean. The cleaning activity must be done by everyone, by the young novice or the old master, by a student or by the master himself, the goal is to wipe off the dust on your consciousness (ego is the dust) thus to humble yourself because otherwise you will not be ready to “listen and to learn” if your ego is strong at the beginning of the class. If you really want to become a master of your art, you must first work on yourself and reach a state of being free of thoughts (mushin), and then you can start on the technique (waza) of that art. There is a strict procedure how to do that before you can start class: Arrive 30 minutes before the class begins. Step 1: when you enter the dojo, do NOT talk with anybody and go directly to the changing rooms and wash your feet and hands, put on your uniform and put your clothes and shoes in perfect order. Step 2: start cleaning the dojo, begin with the floor, then clean also the mirror, stools, equipment etc. Do not do the cleaning act negligently, be better than the professional cleaning lady who is paid for it. Step 3: Go in a corner, kneel down in Seiza, put your chin and neck in proper position, close your eyes and start with the breathing (3 times breathing per minute max, you must be properly instructed in the breathing activity, because the oxygen saturation in the blood regulates your heart beat). Step 4: when the teacher steps on the tatami, greet him and go immediately to the line, now follow his teaching, and probably you start with warm-up exercises. So before you start practicing the specific technique, you should prepare yourself about 30 minutes before the class, and if you do that, you will learn from each class tremendously.
