TRAIL RIDES! Why include them in your training program?
Riding outside the arena tests the horses ability to stay focused on their rider without having the comfort of the arena rails. As I love to let the horses (and myself) get some change of scenery that is not the only purpose to these rides in the forest. It is important to make sure that what we are doing in the arena translates to any new environment. Working solo trail rides allows the horses to have new elements to think about while building different muscles, learning that the cues stay the same no matter the location, and have ability to maintain a balanced frame while on uneven or hilled terrain. I love having these trails right here at our facility to ensure a diverse training routine. All the horses did great today and showed me exactly what we need to be working on in the arena.
I encourage you to get out of the arena with your horses this week and see what elements may need improving that may be covered up in the comfort of the arena! What are your favorite trails to ride on?

New month -> new training horse!
Welcome Sister! This sweet girl is a 22yr old ex ranch and rodeo horse who has come in to get settled into a calmer retirement lifestyle. She is used to being hot and prancy in her “work” mindset but her owners are wanting to use her as their trail/leisurely pleasure riding horse. I’m excited to get to work with her and help her get used to her new life.

Spa day here at the stables❣️ Arlo, Raptor, Mac, and Zara all thoroughly enjoyed getting their winter dirt and grime off! They also all stood very well while I braided their manes and tails. Successful spa day! All good life skills to check off for them.

The Sliding J team had a wonderful time at the Nina Halvorson Horsemanship clinic. Thank you Rachel Ann for being up for me riding Raptor today. He was a wonderful boy and helped connected many pieces in both of our education. Zara got to learn how to ground drive and I got to watch some of my lesson students dive deeper into the problems we have been working through. Couldn’t be happier with how the day went. ❣️
