if you've taken a group class with me before you may have noticed i intentionally set up the space so that I am facing the mirror if covering the mirror is not an option, while those who are practicing have their backs to it.
I do this for many reasons, but most importantly to help foster a sense of felt safety.
Mirrors can trigger self-comparison, body dysmorphia, or nervous system hypervigilance, that feeling of "someones watching me" in group settings.
And for some focusing outward on the entire room's movements via a mirror can be overstimulating + overwhelming.
Without mirrors, there is no "perfect" shape to achieve. Those who are practicing with me are invited to adapt the practice to their own bodies, which restores control, agency + choice.
The focus shifts to how a pose feels rather than how it looks which cultivates present-moment awareness (interoception) + further supports mind-body connection.
This allows the nervous system to settle, which in turn allows the mind + body to settle giving opportunity to those practicing to experience a chance to let down their guard. To experience restorative rest.
This is why holding yoga spaces with a trauma-informed lens is important. Because your felt safety in a space should always be a priority.
