On this day in 1964, Jim Ryun became the first high school runner to break 4 minutes for the mile with his 3:59.0 in Compton, California.

He finished 8th overall. It was also first time that 8 runners broke 4 minutes in the same race.

Dyrol Burleson was the winner in 3:57.4.

Henriette Jager wins the women’s 400 in Rome.

Keely Hodgkinson runs a new personal best of 51.14 (51.61) as she works on improving her speed to take a shot at the 800 meter world record later this summer.

Ethiopian 🇪🇹 women sweep the top 7 spots in the 5000 meters in Rome.

What a race. New personal bests for 9 of the top 11 finishers and new national records for Burundi and France.

The winning time by Amebaw is a 2026 world lead.

Georgia Hunter Bell closes in 58.59 to win a stellar women’s 1500 in Rome.

It was the third PB in a row (1500, 800, 1500) for Klaudia Kazimierska in 2nd.

Just announced:

St Louis will host the 2028 Olympic marathon trials.

SIX SPOTS ON THE LINE⏱️🇺🇸

USATF announces St. Louis, Missouri, as the home of the 2028 US Olympic Marathon Trials. Three men and three women will earn spots to represent Team USA in the marathon at the LA 2028 Olympic Games. The marathon will be the first team selected for Team USA across all sports, taking place on March 25, 2028.

The US Trials standards are as follows:
Men - 2:16:00
Women - 2:37:00

Races to watch:

Women’s 200-

Melissa Jefferson Wooden (USA) makes her outdoor debut and faces Julien Alfred (LCA) who has already run 21.86 this year

Women’s 400-

800 meter world champion Keely Hodgkinson will look to improve her personal best of 51.61 as she is working on sharpening her speed to make an attempt at the outdoor world record over 800 meters later this year. She faces a field including 6 women who have all run under 50 seconds, 2 of whom have already done so this year.

Women’s 1500-

Laura Muir is in good form, coming off of a seasonal best of 4:00.77 run last weekend.

She will be facing Abbey Caldwell (AUS) who has already run 3:56.12 this year, Nikki Hiltz (USA) will make her 2026 outdoor debut, Klaudia Kazimierska (POL) recently ran a 3:59.99 PB, Jemma Reekie (GBR) who looks to rebound after a fall in her 800 meter race last week and the favorite, Georgia Hunter Bell.

Hunter Bell has a best of 4:01.52 this year and a personal best of 3:52.61

Women’s 5000 meters-

World indoor 3000 meter champion Nadia Battocletti (ITA) will be making her season debut. She has a personal best of 14:23.15 and will face a trio of Ethiopians who have already run 14:24 this year!

Men’s 100-

Noah Lyles will face some tough competition from American speedster Jordan Anthony. Anthony has already run 9.91 this season and Ferdinand Omanyala (KEN) has run 9.94 compared to 9.95 for Lyles.

Men’s 800-

Features American record holder Bryce Hoppel and Donovan Brazier against Ireland’s Mark English and France’s Gabriel Tual.
