There is power in moving slowly between Cat and Cow.
This simple sequence invites gentle movement through the spine while creating space to notice the relationship between breath, sensation, movement, and the stable support beneath the body.
In a trauma-sensitive yoga class, Cat–Cow sequences can offer:
• A predictable and repeatable movement pattern
• Opportunities to notice physical sensations without judgment
• Choice around pace, range of motion, and breath
• Connection with the mat, chair, floor, or other supporting surface
• A way to explore movement while remaining oriented to the room
• Practice making choices and responding to the body’s feedback
Cat–Cow does not need to be large or performed perfectly to be meaningful. It can be practiced on hands and knees, seated in a chair, standing with the hands supported, or through a smaller movement of the pelvis and spine.
If it feels available, you can place blankets beneath the knees or blocks beneath the hands for additional comfort and support. Students can also keep their gaze lifted, pause between movements, move independently of the breath, or choose another posture entirely.
The power of Cat–Cow is not found in how deeply someone moves. It may be found in the opportunity to notice support, explore choice, and respond to what feels appropriate in the moment.
As yoga teachers, we offer possibilities. Students remain the decision-maker. Their body, their pace, their choice.❤️
