Reminder!

Enjoyed the raw food dog summit! So many people misinformed on dog food which turns out to be super unhealthy for your pet causing inflammation, allergies, disease and vet bills. 🥹 Here are some foods to start feeding your dog or better yet… go Raw

SUPER-FOODS TO IMPROVE YOUR PET’S DIET
- Dr. Judy Morgan
You can improve your pet’s health and longevity by adding some “super-foods” to their daily diet. The term superfood achieved the distinction of being added to the Merriam Webster dictionary in 2014 and is defined as “a food (such as salmon, broccoli, or blueberries) that is rich in compounds (such as antioxidants, fiber, or fatty acids) considered beneficial to a person’s health. This list includes some of my favorites.

Fresh wild-caught fish (salmon or cod) – loaded with naturally anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids that support heart, joint, skin, and brain health. Fish is also high in vitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin that degrades quickly in processed food that is stored for long periods. Canned sardines in water can be used for these same benefits.

Fresh berries – blueberries and cranberries contain polyphenols which are powerful antioxidants that destroy inflammation-causing free radicals in the body. They can inhibit tumor growth, lower blood sugar, and decrease chronic inflammation. Anthocyanins in berries improve cognitive (brain) skills. Cranberries help prevent E.
coli bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall, reducing urinary tract infections. Berries
should be smashed or ground for easier digestion.

Bone broth – contains glucosamine and chondroitin which support joint health and
help slow the progression of degenerative joint diseases. Rich in amino acids, it can also be used during recovery after illness or surgery. Bone broth helps heal leaky gut and decrease inflammation in the digestive tract.
Mushrooms – best served cooked; steam or sautee’ in coconut or olive oil. Mushrooms contain compounds that have been proven to have anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-tumor properties. They provide an excellent source of fiber for the good bacteria in the gut, improving the immune system. They help lower cholesterol and regulate blood sugar. They are particularly useful for senior pets with muscle weakness or cardiac problems, as supportive care for pets with Cushing’s disease, and for pets with viral diseases that compromise the immune system (FIV, FIP, FeLV for example). Shiitake is one of my favorite mushroom species. Dried mushrooms or mushroom powder can also be used.
Dark leafy greens – a 2005 study showed that dogs who ate green leafy vegetables had a 90% reduction in their risk of developing cancer. Greens such as spinach and kale are rich in phytonutrients that give them antioxidant and anti- inflammatory qualities. They are high in calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamins A, C, and K. They are particularly useful for pets that have liver disease or anemia. Greens should be processed in some way to break down the plant cell walls – chopping, grinding, or cooking will accomplish this.
Eggs – provide high-quality protein and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. One egg will supply about 75 calories. Eggs can be fed raw or cooked.
Pumpkin – rich in beta-carotene which enhances immune health and strengthens the eyes. Pumpkin is a great source of soluble and insoluble fiber which helps regulate bowel function. Canned or fresh pumpkins can be used.

We have been having a time here! Now my sweet Duke got sprayed by a skunk!! 😳
He was running around our 10 acre property and came back to the house with a swollen eye and foaming at the mouth. That is not what you would like to see with your dog. OK… what the heck happened… I didn’t exactly know what happened or honestly what to do. So the only thing I could think of was to throw him in the shower and rinse out his mouth and his eye so I could evaluate him. I rinsed him for about five minutes. It apparently worked because his red agitated gums returned to normal and he stopped foaming at the mouth. I called the emergency vet just to see what the recommendation was. They recommended the same protocol that I did. I mixed hydrogen peroxide baking soda and dish soap and gave my dog a bath with that mixture followed by conditioner. After monitoring his vitals Duke is fine now eating and drinking. I wasn’t planning on a skunk air freshener in the house tonight!! Wow that is potent.

ALWAYS CARRY A FIRST AID KIT! My dog Daisy was stung by fire ants on our hike. She was very agitated trying to chew at her paw and limping all the way back. I could tell she was in much discomfort when she got into the truck. She was still vigorously chewing at her paw and panting and breathing heavily. I had my first aid kit with me. I used essential oils for insect bites applied topically, hydrocortisone for itching applied to paw and a dog pain pill. After the treatments took effect she was fine. I did monitor her vitals and she was eating and drinking. I also carry a beef jerky stick in my pack so I can administer the pain pill with food.

Fat buildup about halfway on spinous processes. Transverse processes cannot be felt. Slight fat covers ribs. Spinous processes and ribs easily discernable; tailhead prominent but individual vertebrae cannot be identified visually. Hip joints appear rounded but easily discernable; lower pelvic bones not distinguishable. Withers, shoulders and neck accentuated.

Body condition influences everything in your horse’s life, from reproductive efficiency, to performance, to good health.

By using Body Condition Scoring, you can find out what kind of shape your horse is in, and work to improve the score. Scoring focuses on critical areas of the body, based on palpable fat and visual appearance.

IDEAL HORSE BODY CONDITION SCORES

Most horses, including performance horses and growing horses, should be in a body score of 5-6. For optimum reproductive efficiency, broodmares should be a 5-7, and not allowed to lose condition such that they are below a 5 during breeding season. Horses over a condition score of 7 may be at a greater risk for developing metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance.

A. Along the Neck

B. Along the withers

C. Crease down back

D. Tailhead

E. Ribs

F. Behind shoulder
