The major application deadlines have past….and you didn’t draw a tag.
Every year odds change, rules change, and tags seem to get harder and harder to draw, BUT….
….it doesn’t have to feel this way.
Let us show you how a Rolling Bones membership and application strategy can help you maximize your time in the field and your money spent on tags.

One of our favorite shots from the 3D shoot last weekend.
The first target of the course is an 82 yard shot at caribou from an elevated platform.
Depending on what time of day you got to the target the wind can really make you just happy to hit foam.
Were any of you able to 12-ring this one?

Now for the final advice for this beginner's strategy to hunting antelope...
6. Keep your first hunt affordable.
Your first antelope hunt does NOT need:
- Expensive optics
- Premium gear
- A guided hunt
- Max points
A basic western setup, a good mapping app, and a solid plan can absolutely get it done.
7. Hunt more often, not just “better someday”
The hunters who improve the fastest are the ones gaining experience every fall.
Antelope are the perfect species to:
- Learn western terrain
- Build confidence
- Introduce family/friends to western hunting
- Create future elk and mule deer strategies
That’s why antelope are often the gateway into western big game hunting.
At Rolling Bones Outdoors, this is exactly how many members start their western hunting journey:
- Build a realistic application strategy
- Mix opportunity with long-term goals
- Avoid wasting points or missing deadlines
- Hunt NOW while building toward future dream hunts
The best antelope strategy for a beginner isn’t “wait for perfection.”
It’s: Start gaining experience and go hunting consistently.

As we continue on to Part II, don't overcomplicate things.
3. Focus on easier-to-draw units first
Ignore social media pressure to chase 85-inch goats right away.
Your first hunt should teach you:
- Glassing
- Stalking
- Western navigation
- Shot ex*****on in open country
- Public land hunting
You can always upgrade units later once you gain experience and points.
4. Start building points while still hunting
This is where many hunters get stuck.
A better approach:
- Apply for long-term premium tags
- But also hunt easier units in the meantime
You don’t want to spend 8 years “waiting to start.”
5. Learn public land access and private land realities
Antelope hunting is heavily impacted by land access.
Some units look amazing on paper but are mostly private land. Beginners should prioritize:
- Good public land percentages
- Walk-In Access programs
- Easy logistics
- Shorter travel distances

We get a lot of questions on beginners strategy to hunting more out west. Hunting antelope is one of the best ways to gain both experience and acclimate yourself to hunting western big game. So we thought we would share a beginners strategy in a three part series for you!
A beginner antelope strategy should focus on one thing first: OPPORTUNITY.
Antelope are one of the best western species to start with because:
- Draw odds are generally better
- Hunts are more affordable
- You can learn western hunting without waiting 10+ years
- Success rates are often very high compared to elk or sheep
The biggest mistake beginners make is overcomplicating the process or only chasing “trophy units.” Your first goal should simply be: GO HUNTING.
Here’s a strong beginner antelope strategy:
1. Prioritize States With Good Non-Resident Opportunity
A few of the best beginner-friendly antelope states include:
- Wyoming
- Colorado
- Montana
- South Dakota
Each offers different advantages:
- Wyoming = best overall combination of opportunity + quality
- Colorado = easier access and solid public land hunts
- Montana = combo opportunities with deer/elk
- South Dakota = solid archery opportunities and good draw systems
2. Build a “Plan A, B, and C”
Don’t rely on one application.
A smart beginner strategy might look like:
- Plan A: Draw a rifle antelope tag
- Plan B: Apply for archery antelope
- Plan C: Watch leftovers, returned tags, or OTC opportunities
Hunters who consistently hunt every year are usually flexible—not lucky.
