It is not about the number of kata you may know but instead the the substance and depth of one. Nothing is more harmful to the world than a defense art that is not effective in actual self defense.

Nothing more needs to be said of this photo. (Uchicnadi wa chie desu)
Funakoshi Sensei’s Words are (Hoping to see karate included in the universal physical education taught in our public schools I set about revising the kata so as to make them as simple as possible. Times change the world changes and obviously the martial arts must change too. The karate that high school students practice today is not the same karate that was practiced even as recently as ten years ago and it is a long way indeed from the Karate that I learned when I was a child in Okinawa. What is most important is that karate as a form of sport used in physical education should be
simple enough to be practiced without undue difficulty by every body young and old boys and girls men and women).
So if we give Funakoshi Sensei’s comments further
consideration. Primarily he watered his karate down so that it could be both taught to the masses and accepted by those on main land Japan. This new method of promotion resulted in many people around the world going on to receive vast Japanese karate exposure. However karate now developed in to an art that is practised from many varying platforms with many working off a different base compared to the training being done on Okinawa that Funakoshi Sensei himself speaks of. The only sadness is that many do so with little meaning of real understanding or foundation for their karate techniques to work at all with artistic form taking preference over practicality and function. There are also those that know 1000’s of applications but in truth most would struggle
to make things work due to a very poor base or understanding of this true Karate of old Okinawa that Funakoshi Sensei speaks of. An analogy of having the gun but not the ammunition comes to mind here Obviously you can use the bayonet of the gun you can even strike people off the butt of the handle. But is that truly using the gun *karate* correctly or in a way that it was originally intended for.
Chinkuchi a term used in Okinawan karate. This word is not a Japanese term but a Uchinaguchi (Okinawan language) term how much of its understanding has been lost from its translation from Uchinaguchi to Yamatoguchi (Japanese language) and the original Okinawan roots. Chinkuchi can not be tough from books or videos it is a feeling of linking the the right things together.
For some time now the karate world has been changing deliberately shift away from authenticity to reach the shining glow of celebrity. This has taken karate out of the dojo and placed it on the stage of entertainment. There is a paradox in karate (the humility of teachers who are valuable often hides them from those of us who want to learn.)

At first look your impression of Goju Ryu may be of muscular thick necked men who seems to strain and grunt especially when carrying heavy stone jars and seemed to be doing extreme dynamic tension. I have to say that some Goju Ryu people still look like that to me today. But be aware that there are different ways to move in Goju Ryu. While some students are very hard there is a much softer form of movement. The hard students are hard from the beginning to end while the softer students are hard only at the split second of contact. This is Goju Tudi hard soft way of China Hand it is not a karate style but a family way.
The time has come to start work on the new Shindobukan for 2012.
