As a mom and a coach’s wife, I take an absurd amount of wrestling videos.
I love catching the big move, building the highlight reel and capturing years of hard work coming to life on the mat. Those moments are special. But the truth is, the highlight videos don’t fully capture the heart of this sport.
The heart of wrestling looks a lot more like this.
It’s families sharing sacred moments before a match. Parents slowing down long enough to acknowledge the nerves, offer encouragement and remind their child who they are. It’s moms and dads building confidence, calming fears and helping their kids understand that showing up with courage matters far more than the score.
Win or lose, that support never wavers.
This is why I’m so proud of the culture we’ve built at our club.
Of course, we want to develop great wrestlers. We want to help as many athletes as possible reach their goals, stand on podiums and win state titles. But those accomplishments don’t happen by accident. They are built in the ordinary moments that nobody sees.
They’re built through trust between coaches, athletes and parents. Through knowing your coach is in your corner no matter what. Knowing your parents aren’t measuring your worth by wins and losses. Through a community that values character as much as championships.
Because long after the trophies collect dust, these are the moments our kids will remember.
And in the end, that’s what we’re really building.
