Rivers for Change created and successfully ran the California 100 for four years from 2013-2016, introducing hundreds of paddlers to the beauty and accessibility of the Upper Sacramento River. The Rivers for Change Board of Directors and Advisors determined that, while it was a fantastic event, it was time to move on to other projects to engage with the next generation of river stewards and connect people with rivers from source to sea. For the past two years, Rivers for Change has run the Truckee River Source to Sea Educational Paddling Adventure, working with communities, schools, and student ambassadors in hands-on learning events while paddling down the Truckee River.

As active stewards of river systems, Rivers for Change is committed to connecting people to rivers. While Rivers for Change will no longer run the California 100, it has shared all of its assets and experience with the California River Quest, which will be putting on a new event on the Upper Sacramento River.

Inspired by Rivers for Change’s California 100, the Yukon River Quest and other paddle events, an intrepid team of West Coast paddlers created the California River Quest to provide opportunities for people to play on rivers as they prepare for their Quest on the Sacramento River – 25-mile Challenge Quest, 50-mile Ultra-Marathon Quest, 100-mile Endurance Quest or Speed Quest sprint races. You can continue to support Rivers for Change’s work engaging communities through public paddling days and river cleanups, working with youth on education and stewardship, and increasing source to sea literacy through expeditions and their ambassador program. Due to a variety of factors and influences we have decided, with our partners, to cancel the 2017 California 100 Paddle Race and associated clinics. This decision was not arrived at lightly. Our organization has been preserving, protecting, and enhancing the natural values of the Sacramento River since 1984. Due to recent events: staff changes and other major river related projects, actions and concerns, we must now refocus and get to work on helping shape a more sustainable water and resource future for our members and all Californians.
