This kid is may be one our biggest success stories since I started coaching Kids Muay Thai .owings.mills
For months he was one of my worst trouble makers, constantly interrupting my class, being aggressive and disrespectful to other students, rarely giving an effort during the exercises and technical drills... I honestly considered having him banned from the program.
Coach Elaina and I pulled him aside for talks pretty regularly to try and understand him, figure out what we can do to motivate him. We had multiple meetings with his dad - who doesn't speak much English.
Then something happened... He noticed a couple kids in his peer group were attending my Level 1 - invite only class. I only invite students who have a decent foundation of fundamental skills, respectful, good listeners, etc. I refuse to manage behavior when it comes to teaching kids partner drills and eventually spar. Respect and cooperation is a must!
He figured it out, made the necessary changes, and has become one of my top students, and favorite people to work with. He's so eager and enthusiastic to train everyday. He's made tremendous improvements in his skills, and he's on the cusp of earning his Level 1 rank officially! In the picture above he earned a stripe on his LiT rank, and he's ready to level up already π―βΌοΈ
The future is bright for this kid! π

Congrats to Akmal!... our 4th official Level 1 Nak Muay at .owings.mills π
I handed out our new Level 1 rank Redπ΄ headbands, and Liliana & Osman got a stripe on theirs (similar to BJJ belts), since they have been in the semi-private L1 classes that we started just 1 ago now!
We are now only 2 months into meeting with this advanced training group 2x/week instead of 1x. I have also opened the class up to students who are ready to advance their skills beyond the standard fundamentals classes, but also need more time until they are ready to pass Level 1 requirements. This rank category we will call "LiT" π₯ (Level 1 in Training), and they will also get a ranked headband of another color in the near future.
Lastly, Assistant Coach Nick volunteered to work through the L1 test skills with the rest of the class, to make sure his coaching skills are up to par, and that he got his fundamentals down for his upcoming smoker fight in December! He was awarded a Black band, for reaching competition level skills, and for leading the kids.
Congrats to everyone involved! It's been my honor to see the growth before my eyes πππ

.. But seriously this girl of mine amazes me with her strength of will and spirit, just as much as her physical strength. She's supremely confident, because she has learned how strong she really is through practicing &
She couldn't wait for her old parents to get going and leave her to fend for herself, she knows she can handle whatever comes her way.

quynh .flippy with her coaches today at the regional meet, 1st time this season they get to compete outside of their home gym. Thanks to Coach Mladen and his team for having the foresight to keep the girls active and competing even if only able to at the home gym this season under the circumstances, otherwise this opportunity to participate at states and regionals wouldn't have been possible.
Jada came up a little short on her performances today, but came through on her beam routine and earned a 3rd place spot. She's been struggling with her psychology for years when it comes to competing, but she and her coaches know she has what it takes once she's able to align her beliefs with her capabilities. She knows at this level, everyone is good... it's a matter of inches to get to the stands or not. tbc....
