Some of the biggest bucks during the Missouri rut will go to water in the early afternoon for a drink and to cool off. This buck came in at 1pm for a drink and the rest is history. He ran 5 steps into the water and passed. Then I had to wade out in the pond to get him..it was legit! Water sources are key sometimes. Even in nasty ponds.

Shoot or Pass?….

I knew this deer well and had big plans to pass him for several years. However, he was shot in 2024, survived the wound, but it all went down hill from there. In 2025 I watched him all summer and he always was acting off. Held tilting, acting weird, and thin necked and low body weight. His rack was also smaller and underdeveloped from 2024-25 year due to the wound. So I decided I was going to harvest him at (5.5yr) if the opportunity permitted. I was able to move to his patterns due to the Cocoon’s mobility and my trail cam intel. When skinning I inspected him, he was severally riddled with infection all over his body, into his neck and especially around the high wound from 2024. So I’m happy to have harvested him knowing all these circumstances prior. Management is sometimes a tough decision but it keeps the herd healthy for reproduction. (For the “Crossbow”critics. I use my Mathews Archery bow just as much. It is solely based on the situational sit basis..I give my self every advantage..We only live once)

Circa 2014: to one of the most aggressive bucks I’ve ever harvested and managed. With several years of trail cams and patience. He finally came across a corn field on an early November morning strait towards my Cocoon grunt call to 33 yds. At the time I was using PSE which is a great company btw and I arrowed him, broad side as he decided to tear up corn stalks in his dominance at 31 yds.
