How to use UKE technique in Karate

01/20/2026

In this clip, you are witnessing Karate Kumite at a high competitive level.
The distance is close, the techniques are fast, powerful, and decisive. With such intensity, a single uncontrolled strike could easily cause serious injury.
However, the essence of Karate lies not in destruction, but in absolute control. Every technique is delivered with awareness, precision, and restraint. This is the spirit of Budo — fighting with skill, consciousness, and deep respect for the opponent.
In Kumite, victory is not defined by causing injury, but by the ability to control oneself. This is the true boundary between raw strength and the character of a true Karateka.

🥋Bunkai refers to the analysis and extraction of combat techniques from the sequence of movements within a Kata, in order to apply them in real situations. Through bunkai, Karate practitioners can gain a deeper understanding of the meaning behind each Kata and recognize the practical value and usefulness of their training.
Bunkai is not merely the breakdown of techniques, but a path that leads practitioners to the very soul of Kata. Every movement within a Kata carries a specific combative meaning, and through bunkai, Karateka come to understand why Kata exists and why each technique has been preserved and passed down through generations.
What follows is the bunkai of Unsu Kata, illustrated through the performance of the Japanese national team, as shown in the video you have just seen.

Unsu (雲手 / ウンスー), often translated as “Cloud Hands,” is one of the advanced Kata frequently performed at major international Karate competitions.
In this video, both the female and male team Kata of the Japanese national team perform Unsu, demonstrating a profound harmony between technique, rhythm, and the spirit of Karate-do.
The opening of Unsu does not initiate combat — it initiates the mind.
The hands rise slowly, open with palms turning up and down in parallel, the body remains still, the breath settles deep. It is not an attack, but a state of receiving, holding, and transforming. This calm preparation gives birth to the powerful and decisive continuous techniques that follow, like ocean waves rising one after another.
Carrying the meaning of “Cloud Hands,” Unsu embodies softness, adaptability, and inner mastery — no display of force, no revealed intention, yet complete control of the situation.
It is this depth that makes Unsu a Kata many Karateka aspire to practice once they have journeyed far enough on the path of Karate-do.

Thankfully for your sharing amazing video

🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿

Dear Baby true Karateka 🥋❤️
"Her spirit is unshakable, her will unbreakable. Though small in size, she carries the heart of a warrior — calm in the face of challenge, fierce in the pursuit of her goal. Every stance, every strike speaks of discipline, courage, and the quiet promise that she will never back down. This is the spirit of Karate — undefeated, unyielding, and shining through the eyes of a little girl."

SHISOCHIN Kata
Shisochin (四向戦) is a kata of naha-te karate style, whose authorship has been mentioned as Kanryo Higaonna.

There are two theories that explain the origins of kata shisochin: the first suggests that the shape or style comes from white heron or the Tiger, Shaolin kung fu, the other it is from mantis style.

It is said that the kata was introduced in Okinawa through the master Higaonna, when he returned from his trip he made to Fuchi, in Fujian province, where he learned the exercise from the master Ryu Ryu Ko, although some of circumstances did not corroborate the version, it seems that there was already a version of the kata, taught by master Seisho Aragaki.

Shisochin begins at the stance Sanchin dashi in three kyodo when applying three successive nukite zuki. There is a predominance of kaisho waza (open hand) techniques. The posture is eclectic, with high and low stances, highlighting the feature of adaptability. Besides Sanchin dashi, are well marked and ayumi dashi and zenkutsu dashi.

The kata is symmetrical. And, alternating atemi waza, there are also projection techniques - nage waza - and grasping.

Yosh*taka Funakoshi: The Forge of Modern Shotokan Karate

Yosh*taka Funakoshi, also known as Gigo, wasn’t just the son of Gichin Funakoshi the founder of Shotokan Karate he was its revolutionary force. Diagnosed with tuberculosis at a young age, Gigo began his karate journey at 12 to improve his health. By 17, he was in Tokyo, assisting his father in spreading karate across Japan.

But Gigo’s vision differed. He transformed karate from its traditional Okinawan roots into a dynamic, powerful discipline. His training sessions were legendary for their intensity: techniques were repeated hundreds of times until students reached the brink of exhaustion. He believed that by pushing beyond one’s limits in practice, a karateka would be prepared for any real confrontation .

Gigo introduced deeper stances, emphasizing stability and power. He developed new kata, including the Taikyoku series, to instill fundamental principles in students . His approach was holistic, focusing not just on physical prowess but on forging an indomitable spirit.

Though he passed away at just 39, Yosh*taka Funakoshi’s legacy endures. His innovations laid the foundation for the Shotokan Karate we practice today.

Train hard. Push boundaries. Honor the legacy.

I saw an invincible karate spirit in her.
As the founder Gichin Funakoshi once said, "spirit is above all, technique is secondary."
She has both: spirit and technique.
And I believe that she will become more and more beautiful if she maintains the spirit of practicing Karate.
