A new studio coming soon to Richardson TX with partners World Kickboxing Champion Jay Hollywood Wilson and popular UFC crosstrainer Troy Grant

04/13/2019

In honor of Jay, I'm fighting at the United States Muay Thai Open Tournament in Phoenix April 25th-28th.

It's an expensive proposition with travel and other costs. I started a GoFundMe page to raise money for me and other team members to help defray the cost. Please support us by buying a raffle ticket or making a donation. http://frd1.us/USMTO.

I'm fighting for Ohana Warrior Gym . We have an awesome team with 12 fighters (the most in the competition!) from 12 years old to the ancient one (me), almost half women, with both experienced and first time fighters. We've been training in fight camp for 3 months now. I invite all Jay's Kickboxing students to join us, whether you're a beginner or more advanced!

Attached is my attempt at a serious fighter look.

Marc

PS. I tried to post this a month ago. For some reason FB wasn't cooperating. Sorry for the short notice.

I remind Jay Wilson students that several of us are now at Ohana Warrior Gym in Richardson. Ohana is a terrific family-oriented studio, whether you're a beginner, a fighter, or just want a great workout. Mona runs the Muay Thai studio and was a friend of Jay's.

Please come join us and tell them you're a Jay Wilson student and Marc Freedman sent you. I'm typically there Mon 7, Wed 7 (sparring), and Sat 12:30. We also have a few of Jay's students at the lunch classes. You can read my various comments on Ohana in older posts below.

I hope to see you at Ohana. Jay, we miss you, brother.

Jay's students and friends. This is likely the last post for a while. But I'll keep the Facebook group up for Jay's students who want to share memories, kickboxing updates, or other personal news.

I uploaded a few photos of Jay and students to our blog at https://wp.me/p1k1LL-iF. Plus of course there's several at https://jayskickboxing.com. Jay, my friend, we miss you.

Congratulations to Emily Ekatherini Clark and Nathan Clark who had baby Zoe!

Ohana Warrior Gym truly is one big family. We've had 20-25 students at all levels at evening classes, including Wednesday sparring. Diana and Sierra will be fighting at Xtreme Knockout at Gas Monkey Live in September. We have 13 male and female fighters who will be fighting at the U.S. Muay Thai Open Championships in New York in November.

Several of Jay's Kickboxing student are now at Ohana Warrior. If you haven't yet joined us - or at least tried a free class - what are you waiting for?

Mona and the staff bring many different exercises that help you with your form and technique. It's a lot different than just banging on a heavy bag for an hour. It’s a great amount of variety and fun ... and one hell of a workout!

I hope you’ll give it a try, whether you just want hard and varied cardio, to lose weight, to train, or even fight. Free to email me or call with any questions.

Join Jay's students at Ohana Warrior for More Fun, Less Work

Friends,

Several Jay's Kickboxing students have or will be joining us at Ohana - Big Mike, Jason, Lu, Kevin, Asma, Zike, and Amy. Let me know if I left anyone out! Lu was sparring with me last Wednesday. Bobby, Meg, Vince, Kevin, Donovan, Sorin, and others have or will be checking us out soon.

Ohana Warrior will be closed for the July 4 holiday from Jun 30-July 7.

I want to leave Jay's students with a final thought. Any gym you select should provide a good workout where you can dial up your intensity with friendly staff and fellow students.

After several weeks at Ohana, I find one huge difference they provide is ... fun. I enjoyed Jay's workouts at UFC. But frankly it gets boring, if not tedious, when you have your own hanging bag and are banging on it with similar combinations class after class.

Ohana Warrior uses a traditional Muay Thai format where you work out with a partner on pads or a bag and often rotate to new partners. That's quite a different - and I believe, superior - experience.

I've been to some studios where there are just a few students. Ohana almost always has 15-25 students at different levels, both guys and gals. That makes for a better class.

Mona and the staff bring many different exercises, not just combinations, that help you with your form and technique. It's a great amount of variety and fun.

I hope you'll give it a try, whether you just want a great workout, to lose weight, improve your training, or even fight. Free to email me or call with any questions.

Ohana Warrior Update, Plus Sparring & Fighters 06/05/2018

Ohana Warrior update, Sparring and Fighters

Hey gang, I hope everyone had a relaxing Memorial Day Weekend. It's time to get back to the studio and work out!

New student update: I welcome Big Mike who also has joined us at Ohana. When are you coming?

People have asked about Ohana Warrior for sparring and fighters. It's a fabulous studio for that as you'll learn below. Keep the questions coming!

If you haven't sparred, I invite you to give it a try. And no, you won't get hurt. You don't play tennis if all you do is hit balls against a wall. Why similarly limit your kickboxing workout?

Sparring class is Wednesday 7-8:30. The class has a large mix of beginners, experienced students, and fighters, both guys and gals, of all sizes. There are plenty of people so you can find someone at your level. If you're with someone more experienced, it's a great chance to learn. People will take it easy and play mostly defense so you can focus on combinations to see what works.

After sparring, students circle up to give each other feedback. Mona, instructors, and other students commend you on your improvement and provide valuable tips you can learn for your next class.

Fighting. Ohana is an excellent fighters gym. In addition to sparring, Mona invites all fighters to stay after class for advanced work. Ohana participates in local sparring and fights and typically brings more fighters than other studios. They brought several students and staff to the last US Muay Thai tournament. Ohana fighters came home with multiple belts, including three first places, two for the women.

Join us! Ohana Warrior 525 W. Arapaho Rd, Ste 18, Richardson (972) 968-7306. Try a free class. Tell them you're a Jay Hollywood Wilson Kickboxing student.

Train hard, Live Long, and Prosper,
Marc

More on Ohana Warrior, Far North Dallas 06/01/2018

Friends, I wrote my last post on our recommendation of Ohana Warrior in Richardson for Jay's Kickboxing students.
Amy is already there. Big Mike and Meg said they'll be coming over. What about you?

Here are a few answers to questions you've asked.

Do they teach technique? Yes. It's important both to prevent injuries and increase your skills. In a recent class we had to run drills with paper held under your armpit, against your forehead, and under your chin to instill proper position (arms down, hands guarding your face, and chin down)!

How hard are the classes? As hard as you want them to be. Remember, it's a family gym. If you're a beginner or getting back to regular training, no problem. Take it easy and work at your own speed. If you're a fighter, there's plenty of opportunity to push yourself, get an excellent workout, and find others in the class who also will be training hard.

Are classes like those at UFC Gyms? Ohana has a few bags for individual work outside classes. Classes follow a more traditional Muay Thai format where you work out with a partner with mitts or a bag. They have 15-25 students at each class. So you're sure to find someone at your size and skill level. Classes start with jumping rope. Again, it's not a problem if you're not ready for a full round. Many students aren't. Do as much as you can, substitute jumping jacks or jogging and punching to the ceiling, etc.

If you're looking for a mass-produced workout like UFC Gyms with your own bag, where they typically don't teach technique and they have the same program or similar drills every class, then Ohana isn't for you. Check out a Title Boxing Club instead.

For most of Jay's career as a teacher, he didn't have individual bags. Ohana's format is what he taught. I have the jumprope to prove it!

Join me at Ohana Warrior for great kickboxing.

Friends, As I promised, I thoroughly checked out several area kickboxing/Muay Thai studios to find one for Jay Hollywood Wilson's students that would make him proud and was in the same area.

We finally have a winner - Ohana Warrior 525 W. Arapaho Rd, Ste 18, Richardson. It's East of Coit, just west of the 75 freeway, not far from where the new studio was going to be, as well as just a mile away from the old UFC Richardson.

Mona, the owner, was a friend of Jay's. They both trained together at Saekson Janjira Muay Thai.
