๐กDid you know about the mental health parity act of 1996?
๐ฅ It provided large group health plans canโt impose annual or lifetime dollar limits on mental health benefits that are less favorable than any such limits imposed on medical/surgical benefits.
๐ฐWhen a plan has parity, it means that if you are provided unlimited doctor visits for a chronic condition like diabetes then they must offer unlimited visits for a mental health condition such as depression or schizophrenia.
๐However, parity doesn't mean that you will get good mental health coverage.
๐ก Here are 3 steps you can take to gain access to good mental health coverage:
1. Look for in-network mental health providers. By staying within the insurance network, you can find providers at a more affordable cost who have been reviewed by the carrier. Most insurance carriers give you the capability to search by location and language.
2. Invite your mental health provider to become an in-network resource. Most insurance carriers have a process to recruit providers into their network which can include participation referrals. Call the number on the back of your insurance card to find out more about the process.
3. Advocate for the care you need. If youโre having trouble finding or paying for a mental health provider, reach out to HR or your health insurance company to ask about your options for care. When benefits have gaps, your voice helps us to identify what needs to be solved. Share your story.

๐คYou can make offering personal pronouns part of the introduction process at your workplace.
๐ง You can ask employees to include their personal pronouns in their email signature.
๐ Longer term find ways to include asking for personal pronouns as part of the interview and onboarding process.
๐ Nothing may be more personal than the way people refer to us though our name and our pronouns. So letโs choose to treat each other with dignity.
