I'm not saying to add on another expense when your business isn't profitable, but consider this:

Is your business NOT profitable because you don't understand your numbers?

Are clients paying you but it just feels like you're paying unending bills and can never pay yourself?

I'd argue that one of the BEST times to hire a bookkeeper is when you aren't profitable so that we can help you right the ship.

Once all your expenses are categorized correctly, you may even be able to use your business's loss to help offset your taxes - but you won't know that without bookkeeping!

What is the ERC?
The ERC is a refundable tax credit designed for businesses who continued paying employees while shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic or who had significant declines in gross receipts from March 13, 2020, to Dec. 31, 2021. Eligible taxpayers can claim the ERC on an original or amended employment tax return for a period within those dates.

To be eligible for the ERC, employers must have:

sustained a full or partial suspension of operations due to orders from an appropriate governmental authority limiting commerce, travel or group meetings due to COVID-19 during 2020 or the first three quarters of 2021,
experienced a significant decline in gross receipts during 2020 or a decline in gross receipts during the first three quarters of 2021, or
qualified as a recovery startup business for the third or fourth quarters of 2021.
As a reminder, only recovery startup businesses are eligible for the ERC in the fourth quarter of 2021. Additionally, for any quarter, eligible employers cannot claim the ERC on wages that were reported as payroll costs in obtaining PPP loan forgiveness or that were used to claim certain other tax credits.

📆 For business owners of an S-Corp or Partnership, March 15th is your business tax filing deadline. Plus, it's the deadline to elect to be taxed as an S-corp for calendar year 2023.

It just sneaks up on you - right?! If you won't be ready to file in time, let's get in touch to file for a 6-month extension to help you avoid penalties for failing to file!

If you're planning to extend your business tax filing, it probably makes sense to file an extension for your individual tax return while you're at it.

Here's how to find out EXACTLY what you need to charge to break even on your business:

☕ To keep things simple, I'm going to use the example of a coffee shop. Starting with fixed costs, it costs the shop $1,000/month to stay open regardless of whether they have any customers.

Next, we've got to find out the contribution margin per cup of coffee. If it costs $2 (variable costs) to make and sell a cup of coffee, and the store charges $6/cup, then the contribution margin is $6 - $2 = $4.

To find the shop's break-even point, you'll take your fixed costs ($1,000) and divide them by your contribution margin ($4) to get 250 cups of coffee needed to be sold by the shop to break-even on a monthly basis.
