Community partners and residents from across the City of Richmond are coming together to host the first annual “Walk to Nature” event on Saturday, March 29th, 2014. The origin of the walk comes from several day outings that fiscal sponsor, Youth Enrichment Strategies, and partner, East Bay Regional Park District, have conducted over the years to introduce Richmond families to nearby regional parks in Richmond that can be accessed easily and affordably. The purpose of this year’s walk is to promote physical activity and good health while connecting with one’s community in nature. Participants will register at 9:00AM and depart from several locations in Richmond to arrive at Miller Knox Regional Shoreline in Pt. Richmond by 11:00 AM. Starting points and their distance to the Miller Knox Sea Gull picnic area (one way) currently include the following:
• Civic Center Plaza – 450 Civic Center Plaza – 3.6 miles
• Richmond Greenway—6th and Ohio—2.2 miles
Currently, public and nonprofit agencies and community residents are meeting weekly to define the various aspects of the hikes including logistics, food/activities, outreach, sponsorships, and volunteer recruitment. Participating agencies and sponsors include: Building Blocks for Kids, City of Richmond, Contra Costa Health Services, Coronado Y, CURME, East Bay Regional Park District, Human Rights Human Relations Committee, Kaiser HEAL Collaborative, KCRT, Lifelong-Brookside, Mechanics Bank, Richmond Police Activities League, Richmond Police Department, Richmond Sanitary Service, Richmond Spokes, Shields-Reid Neighborhood Council, Supervisor John Gioia, Urban Tilth, Weigh of Life, and YES.

Mother Nature tried, but there was no rain on our parade! While is poured outside we celebrated with Walk to Nature activities, music, food, and amazing friends inside the Nevin Center. Thanks for a fantastic day of fun everyone, we are already excited for next years event!

WOW! What an amazing event Walk to Nature 2014 was! Thank you so much to all the families, volunteers, and partner agencies that came out despite the pouring rain! We had an amazing time doing activities, dancing, and sharing delicious burritos with you all!

For the nature lovers who love the feel of rain on their face, come by the YES office at 3029 Macdonald Ave. anytime today to pick up a free rain poncho! (Sorry, we only have human ponchos available:)

If you wake up tomorrow and rain is falling, enjoy your morning and then come join us at 11:00AM inside the Nevin Community Center located at 598 Nevin Ave. in Richmond.
The same park activities and Chipotle lunch will be happening inside with stage performances, live music, the Get Your Summer On! Campaign, free t-shirts, water bottles, and so much more. If the weather clears in the afternoon, we'll go outdoors to Zumba and welcome back the sun.
Rain, rain go away! Despite our finger crossing, prayers, and sun dances, it looks like Mother Nature has other intentions for the weather tomorrow. But don't fear! Walk to Nature is still happening - just in a slightly revised way. Check out the next post for the updated plan

Either way, we'll see you Saturday!
