SOLITUDE & SILENCE
During the Civil War, Lincoln would often seek solace by spending hours in the White House Telegraph Office. There, he found refuge from the chaos, read books, and engaged in thoughtful reflection. This quiet retreat became his haven for strategic thinking and decision-making amidst one of the nation's most challenging times.

During Nelson Mandela’s 27-year imprisonment, he secretly studied Afrikaans, the language of his captors. He believed understanding his adversaries language was crucial for finding common understanding and resolution.

Think of solitude as an antidote to “busyness” and a powerful ally for building a healthy mental environment.

Important leadership decisions often have to be made in the complicated realm of relationships and systems. While some choices are straightforward cause-and-effect, those that have many interacting parts reside in the murky space where formulas falter, and clarity blurs. Leaders are expected to respond swiftly and transparently, and with good evidence. Yet in the complex trenches of human interactions, certainty proves elusive.

Knowing what we can’t know is a potent strategy ushering us to identify potential decision-making errors and opening more opportunities for exploration and adventure.

"Don't waste a death."
This is what he meant: Make use of tragedy. Find ways to know yourself better. Know what you feel. Know where you hide. The better you know yourself, the more accessible, and connected, you can be to others when it's most important.
