Here are my top 5 baits for September bass fishing without forward facing sonar:
1. Core Tackle 22mm Stache on a 3/8oz 1/16oz Dice Rig – Fish this around shallow w**d lines and boat docks.
2. Nichols Lures DUH Spoon 2.0 (3/4oz size) – Use it on any breaking fish you see out in the middle of the lake.
3. Brian's Prop B Propbait – Fish this around shallow pockets with flat rock in clear water to trigger aggressive strikes.
4. Core Tackle Sled Jig + Yamamoto Yama Bug – Target floating boat docks on super flat banks that have small fry swimming around them.
5. Bent Bill Customs Little Bender Glide Bait – Cast this small 5-inch glide bait around shallow, flat rock banks and boulders in 2 to 5 feet of water.

Late Summer is my favorite time to throw a glide bait! Caught this nice one yesterday on Beaver Lake with the Bent Bill Customs Lil’ Bender. This smaller 5” glide bait is great at generating both size and numbers this time of year. It’s also easy to throw on standard 7’-7’2” baitcasting rod.
This fish came off of an isolated offshore boulder I found with SideScan in 5ft of water. Big gizzard shad were pushed up on these boulders in the middle of the afternoon and the glide bait was the perfect presentation to trick them into biting! No FFS used!
Mapping out the precise edge of the cover on SideScan makes all the difference when trying to locate active fish.

Swim Jig beatdown this week thanks to some much needed clouds and rain. Found some quality bass stacked up in 3-5ft of water near an outside grass line. I was throwing a Core Tackle 4/0 3/8oz Swim Jig, hopping it through the grass by popping my rod a few times and then letting it fall back into the grass. Every bite came when the jig was falling back to the grass.
One common misconception is August and September is all the quality bass are still in deep water due to high air and water temps. In reality, these same high temps cause oxygen levels to fall on the main lake, push bass shallower in search of better oxygen levels. Shallow water run-off or shallow vegetation increase oxygen levels in 1-5ft of water, drawing in shad and bluegill. This pushes a lot of quality bass shallow this time of year, putting them in perfect range for a swim jig!
If you haven’t tried a Core Tackle Swim Jig before, it has the majority of the weight on the hook shank. This makes the head smaller and allows it to come through cover better. It also has a custom single cable w**d guard that deflects grass and wood better than a standard brush guard, while still providing great hook-up ratios. Three frog fishing mistakes to avoid:
1. Skipping the edges – Don't reel in fast as soon as your lure clears cover. Slow down at the shade line and walk it side-to-side in place.
2. Stopping after sunrise – Midday summer heat and bluebird skies can trigger topwater bites all day long, so keep fishing past morning.
3. Leaving after one catch – Bass stack up in shallow vegetation. Always make multiple casts in the same patch before moving on.
