Gathered-end hammocks are the "original" and traditional hammock style. They have become extremely popular today thanks to modern manufacturing methods that contribute to relatively lower cost, lighter weight, smaller pack size, and colorful patterns and designs. These hammocks have no spreader bar and are gathered together at each end (hence the name) with either end ropes (nettles) or with a small rope loop threaded through a sewn hemmed channel on each end. Traditional designs include the Mayan with its loose, open weave; the Brazilian with its tight weave and fabric-type feel; and the Nicaraguan with its tight weave and side fringe. Modern gathered-end hammocks are made with lightweight synthetic material and have become popular for every day use and have revolutionized camping and backpacking for their versatility, comfort, and light weight.
