Do It Yourself Wedding Flowers Guide

One of my favorite things to create is a head wreath. This shows the bride’s inspiration on top and my recreation of her inspiration on bottom. Of course, I used products that gave similar look but also coordinated with her choices of flowers and greenery. I made this one similar to how I make garlands only on a super small scale.

Easy garland, hops...comes in different thicknesses depending who you buy it from). Consider untangling it to get multiple 18’ strands. Bar covered with hops garland for the groom who loves beer.

I’m fascinated with this tree and these little tiny flowers that look like baby anthurium. Trying to figure what this is. These little flowers would make sweet boutonnières!

So this Valentine’s Day, avoid sending mixed messages (awkward) by brushing up on what different colors mean.

Red — true love, passion & respect
Dark red — beauty, perfection & adoration
Pink — romance & admiration
Deep pink — appreciation, gratitude & sincerity
Light pink — sweetness & gentleness
Orange — desire, passion & excitement
White — spiritual love, purity & new beginnings
Yellow — warmth, joy & friendship
Lavender — love at first sight

I worked at the California State Fair yesterday to promote California Grown Flowers. We made this small floral chandelier using items that were available...not what I would normally use, but it turned out just fine. I used bind wire to hang it (Thanks Grace Kajimura for giving that to me on your way out), an oasis wreath form that had a plastic center we cut out, bowl tape to reinforce the wreath form and we were off to add flowers...sometimes the best things come out of scrambling for mechanics.

This is a great vase reference, I call it vase anatomy. Vases with necks, chokes or hour glass shapes are easier to design in...in my humble opinion.

This is a very easy flower crown to make but can only be done this way if it’s not too hot because the flowers don’t have a water source and aren’t sealed in any way. To make this crown take a long 22 or 20 gauge wire. Turn back one end to create small loop or hook. Place the wire against your head and bend the wire to the shape of your head. You should end up with something that looks like a partial circle. Use roses (I like spray roses) and mini carnations and poke the “bulb” part of flower with the wire. Add as many as you desire until you reach the other end. Bend the other end into a hook/loop. Now cut thin ribbon and tie it onto both end where you made the hook. Super Easy!
