When we started Swoop Time in 2009 our goal was to provide quality services for youth and community developement by way of sports. We decided t

The Fosbury Flop is pure biomechanical genius. Curved approach, penultimate step drop, bar clearance with a hollow arch — your center of mass never has to cross the bar. Physics wins every time.

Pole vault is not a jump. It is a controlled collision between kinetic energy and elastic return. Plant angle, grip height, and takeoff speed determine everything before you leave the ground.

Hammer throw distance lives in the orbit, not the release. A wider radius, low entry angle, and 3-4 rotations of accelerating speed create the centrifugal force that separates 150 feet from 200.

The 4x100 is lost in the exchange zone, not the straightaway. A blind pass, 20m window, and perfect acceleration match between athletes is where tenths of seconds are gained or surrendered.

Triple jump is not three separate jumps. It is one continuous transfer of force. Phase distribution — 37% hop, 30% step, 33% jump — is the blueprint elite athletes live by.

Javelin distance is built in the approach, not the throw. Five crossover steps, a blocked left side, and a 34-degree release angle — that is where meters are made or lost.

Most 5K runners go out too fast and die at mile 2. Elite cross-country is run in thirds — controlled, surging, and closing. Energy system discipline beats raw fitness every time.

The long jump is won at the board, not in the air. Your penultimate step controls everything — lowering your hips, loading the plant, converting horizontal speed into vertical lift.

The race is decided before the gun fires. Block start mechanics — shin angle, drive phase, first-step power — separate elite sprinters from the rest. Master the launch.

The 400m is won in the third 100. Most athletes die there. The ones who survive trained their lactate threshold, not just their legs. Mechanical efficiency under fatigue is the real separator.

Hurdle clearance is not about jumping — it is about cutting. The athlete who attacks the barrier with the least vertical displacement wins. Engineer your trail leg, own the race.

Want to help your athlete get faster? Start with these 3 simple speed tips.

Speed is not just about running harder. For young athletes, better posture, rhythm, and short quality reps can make a big difference.

1. Stay tall Keep the chest up and eyes forward. Good posture helps athletes move more efficiently and keeps their stride strong.

2. Drive the arms Fast arms help create fast legs. Swing the arms straight forward and back, and keep the hands relaxed.

3. Practice short starts Try 10-yard starts with full effort, then rest before the next rep. Short, powerful reps help build acceleration better than doing too much at once.

One reminder for parents and athletes: quality matters more than quantity. Good speed work should be focused, controlled, and age-appropriate.

At Swoop Time, we teach fundamentals that help young athletes build speed, confidence, and strong movement habits the right way.

Save this for your next practice.

Which speed tip should athletes focus on most this week, 1, 2, or 3? Share your own speed tip below, or drop your question in the comments and we may answer it in a future post.
