My Brothers Went Crazy This Past Weekend. Going 6-0 and getting 1st Place. It wasn’t easy 2 games we were down at half and turned it around. Proud of the hard work they put in. Now it’s back to the lab again.

Defensive adjustments were major key this weekend.
Learning that plays are great but teaching players to make small in game adjustments is more valuable in my opinion then teaching plays out right. All plays work and don’t work, and not every unit plays well in every system.
Basketball is primarily a game of match ups. Where can the adjustments be made in both ends to give your team position to win.
It’s a chess board.

Smart Players do more then play basketball. I’m going to force my boys to play chess with me.
Reason 1, chess is a game that require the player to think 4-8 steps ahead, and by doing this we challenge our brain to understand and learn strategy.
Reason 2, chess is you verse the opponent. No teammates means you have to rely solely on yourself to win.
Reason 3, Chess is a game played by kings and generals. To understand the game of chess is to understand how to gain an advantage in position.
Reason 4, you must watch everything your opponent does. You must consider his approach and strategy, and you must come up with a plan to use that against him.

Took 2nd Place in the 16u Division.
This is a 15u/14u squad. We only have one 16 year old. It was tough loss for us. Down by 20+ brought it back with in 7 and had a real shot of securing the victory.
The little mistakes lost of the game. Some coaching mistakes from me, I put one of our best guys in a little early with 4 fouls. And honestly the other team was very skilled.
I have never seen a team with 8 guys, who all have super high arced floaters. One kids jumper was just money, I’m talking this kid shot it like 80%
Never the less these boys fought hard till the very end and I believe they learned a valuable lesson from this tournament. Here is the lesson.
Your character as a man does show when your winning. Your true character shows when your losing. And these guys showed their true character. They are warriors. Ready to go to battle under any circumstances. Ready to fight with each other until the very end. Their hearts went into this game they could have gave up on the beginning. But they didn’t, their became even greater and their focus was like that man ready for war. If a team is going to beat us, their coaches and their players better have the best game possible, cause we don’t slow down and we don’t give up.

We won the tournament. Boys did good staying consistent on both ends of the floor. Everyone is finding their rhythm and getting big buckets for us. Defensive pressure was very solid as well.
I want to emphasize this point as a coach, defense turns into offense, but only when defense is consistent. That doesn’t mean a stop every possessions that’s a highly unlikely scenario. That major key is to keep the defense focused on a key set of principles, And to be disciplined on defense is to stick to those principles even when the other team is doing well on the offensive end.
Also I had some guys who were given an assignment to shut down one player. (This kid was killing us) He only scored 2 points once the adjustment was made.
X’s and O’s are great but sometimes it’s better to just play basketball and keep the adjustments really simple.
Defensive Principle #1 Identify Top Two Scores. Usually that’s who a team is going to run their offense through.
