Today is Miyagi An’ichi sensei’s birthday. An’ichi sensei was born on February 9, 1931. After World War II, he began training in karate with three other friends in 1948 under Goju-ryu founder Miyagi Chojun Sensei. After a while, all the other friends stopped practicing, and only An’ichi Sensei continued to practice at Chojun Sensei's house until Aragaki Shuichi Sensei joined in May 1951. He continued to practice with Chojun Sensei until the day before Chojun Sensei’s death on October 8, 1953.

An’ichi Sensei is best described in the biography of the late Sensei Lam King Fung (former IOGKF Hong Kong Chief Instructor). He wrote that when he visited Okinawa in 1974 to train Goju-ryu, Uehara Ko Sensei, who just left Jundokan and opened his own dojo, told him“An’ichi Miyagi is the most knowledgeable man on the subject of Goju-Ryu in Okinawa. Chojun Miyagi sensei’s last inner disciple and witness to the final shape of Goju-Ryu as Chojun sensei intended it to be.”

Miyagi An’ichi sensei who was a Saiko Shihan (supreme master) of IOGKF passed away in April 2009.

We respect and appreciate his life and what he gave us.
