United Karting - BWI’s double header weekend: cold, humbling in spots, and our first podium🥉at United!

We've been working at this track all year, and the pieces are coming together. We try to focus on progress over results, but it sure feels good to celebrate when they show up.

Highlights:

- Purple (fastest) lap in 3 of 6 races.
- Better starts, holding or gaining a spot in most races
- Not letting mistakes define the race

About that last one: in Sunday's main event, I went for the lead and spun out. Waiting for a safe re-entry dropped me to 7th. Over the final 7 laps, I caught the pack, set a personal best, and passed for 3rd to finish 4th.

When Dad asked what fueled the comeback, I credited some colorful language that stayed between me and my helmet 🤐

Yesterday was United Karting - BWI race #7, and the weather could not make up its mind, which meant neither could we. Between gear changes and tire swaps (felt like a hundred of each), we were finalizing the setup minutes before each session.

☁️ Practice: Slicks. 3rd fastest out of 10.

🌧️ Qualifying: Wet tires. Our first time EVER driving in the rain 😬. Qualified 6th out of 10.

☁️ Pre-Final: Back to slicks 🙃. Went from 6th to 1st! A huge confidence boost at a track that's given us a run for our money on top positions.

🌧️ Final: Rain tires again 🫠. Finished 5th. In a frantic switch to rain tires, Dad lost a wheel nut. Huge thanks to Locked & Loaded Motorsports for the quick aid and ensuring we didn’t lose a wheel.

Chaotic, soggy, but a great day of learning. Also, first wet-weather race in the books!

Today we squeezed in a morning practice at United Karting - BWI!

Got some lead/follow exercises with fellow Gold Kart and Snap Ya Neck Racing driver/coach, Hudson Brown which gave me the opportunity to work on my line and racecraft.

Looking forward to using what I’ve learned in a couple weeks.

Last weekend we got to experience our first Cup Karts East event at New Jersey Motorsports Park - NJMP! Very organized event and the “funnest track” yet!

Brand new track, brand new challenges. Friday practice with our coach Hudson Brown set the tone. With him in our corner, we made fast improvements right out of the gate.

Lots of seat time this weekend helped us zero in on our improvement areas: starts and early race pace. We also picked up some valuable lessons on the mental side of racing — just as important as anything we work on behind the wheel.

We’ve been on a short social media hiatus, just a busy summer full of roller coasters, family visits, birthdays and of course racing!

We don’t have full details for every event (I can barely remember what I ate yesterday), but the results for our recent Sandy Hook Speedway results are below. More track results will follow.. eventually 😅

Qualified: Pole! out of 6 (Our first ever karting pole)

Last weekend we took on Sandy Hook Speedway Kart-Um-Downs. 4 track configurations, each with a practice, qualify, and main. Quick maths: 12 times on track in 2 days, in 90° heat.🥵 Yeah, it was a workout.

Sure, there was only 2 of us in class…Podium was guaranteed. But don’t let that fool you. This was some of the most intense racing I’ve had in karting.

Our qualifying gap? .02 seconds. (Grab your phone stopwatch, hit start and stop as fast as you can. That’s the margin.) The races were no different. 12-lap features, multiple passes, and at the end? Still separated by .12 or less. (Same test. Barely a blink.)

When every lap matters that much, 2nd place hits different. So does 1st.

🏆🏆Came home with 2 wins!

Topped it all off making some great new friends.

We got to visit Summit Point Motorsports Park to race in the Capital Karting Challenge

Race weekend recap!
P2 🥈for Saturday’s final (which was ran Sunday morning)
P5 for Sunday’s final

The weather AND a cone both tried to take us down. Saturday brought ☀️, then drizzle, then high winds, then a ⛈️ resulting in a track closure, and a shredded canopy. Sunday, Oliver found even more speed, setting a personal best and qualifying 2nd again. Unfortunately, in the heat race, he caught a cone in his RF tire that sent him off-track where it would put him starting 5th in the final. Never quite found the groove after that. Silver lining: the speed is there and we know our mistakes help us learn and grow!

Yesterday was an eventful day at United Karting - BWI for race #2!

Practice: P4 out of 11

Qualify: P6 out of 11 — only 0.07s separated 4th, 5th, and 6th!

Pre-Final: Got spun on the start, climbed back to P7, then got pinched into the barrier while making a pass attempt for P6. Race over. 😞

Dad, with the help of the Skaags family got to work — bending, banging, and straightening parts to get the kart back together just in time for the Final.

Final: Started P11, finished P7.

We learned lots, found plenty of opportunities to grow, and had a blast with track friends!

Thanks to Snap Ya Neck Racing, Gold Kart, and coaching from Hudson Brown that gave us the speed to compete! Hopeful next race, we get a chance to use it towards the front.

Mid-60s and ☀️, a beautiful day for practice at United Karting - BWI. Huge thanks to Hudson Brown’s coaching where we were able to gain a second off our lap time!!

The pieces are comin together and we are finding our rhythm.
