💔 Heartbreaking Destruction Across Los Angeles 💔
My heart aches deeply as I see the fires spreading across LA and beyond. Friends have lost their homes, and now even more friends—and family—are on the path of these dangerous flames, with the fires closing in quickly. The destruction and devastation are unimaginable. 😭
I’ve been through this before. During the Woolsey fires, our home was almost taken. The flames came right up to the hill behind our property and, by some miracle, bypassed our home entirely, continuing to burn down several more homes behind us before finally stopping. The stress, anxiety, and fear my family and I felt during those long days and nights are emotions I will never forget.
Knowing what so many people are going through right now—the pain, the uncertainty, and the overwhelming sense of loss—is truly heartbreaking.
We’re not just witnessing homes and wildlife being destroyed—the smoke-filled air is already taking a toll on the health and safety of so many, even miles away from the flames. 🔥
If you’re in the LA area, please don’t wait until evacuation orders come. Grab your family, animals, and the things that matter most, and leave while you still have a safe path to do so. Some who choose to stay behind never make it out alive.
Find safe passage to clear skies, and wait to return home until the fires and smoke have fully cleared. It’s the best option for your safety, your loved ones, and your animals.
The damage caused by wildfires extends far beyond the flames. It’s crucial to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to protect your health and environment during the months that follow.
The poor air quality can cause:
Headaches
Respiratory issues (coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath)
Eye irritation and burning
Fatigue and dizziness
Long-term lung and heart damage
Other debilitating chronic illnesses
❗️Children, elderly individuals, pregnant women, pets, and those with asthma and other respiratory conditions to autoimmune conditions are especially vulnerable.
For those who choose to stay, here are some vital safety tips and health advice to help you navigate this crisis as safely as possible. 🙏
✅ Safety Tips to Protect Your Health and Home
👉 Stay Indoors with Windows and Doors Closed: Keep as much smoke out of your home as possible.
👉 Use High-Quality Air Purifiers: HEPA filters are ideal. If you don’t have one, create a DIY version with a box fan and HEPA filter.
👉 Wear N95 Masks Outdoors: Only step outside when absolutely necessary.
👉 Seal Your Home: Use damp towels, tape, or weather stripping to seal gaps under doors and windows.
👉 Create a Clean Room: Choose one room in your home to keep as smoke-free as possible.
👉 Hydrate Frequently: Drink plenty of water to combat dehydration from smoke exposure.
👉 Steam Inhalation Therapy: Use essential oils like eucalyptus or peppermint to open airways.
👉 Take Short, Cool Showers: Helps remove smoke particles from skin and hair.
👉 Keep Pets Indoors: Animals are just as sensitive to smoke as humans.
👉 Monitor Air Quality: Use apps like AirNow or PurpleAir to stay updated on air quality levels. Avoid outdoor activity when AQI exceeds unhealthy limits, which can range from 51 for sensitive individuals to 150 for others. Currently, much of the city is experiencing AQI levels between 150-200, which is very unhealthy for everyone. Alarmingly, some areas are reporting levels nearing 500, considered highly dangerous for all lives. 😳 Prioritize staying indoors and protecting yourself and loved ones during these hazardous conditions.
👉 Minimize Physical Exertion: Heavy breathing increases smoke inhalation.

🔥 The Invisible Threat: Toxins in the Air, Water, and Environment
The fires are devastating, but the smoke-filled air is just one of many dangers. Wildfires release a cocktail of toxic substances, not only from burning vegetation but also from destroyed buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure. In addition, water used to extinguish fires often creates secondary issues, such as mold growth and mycotoxins, which pose severe long-term health risks.
🌫️ Airborne Toxins
Particulate Matter (PM2.5): Tiny particles that pe*****te deep into the lungs and bloodstream, causing respiratory and cardiovascular issues.
Carbon Monoxide (CO): A toxic gas that can displace oxygen in the blood, leading to dizziness, confusion, or worse.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Released from burning plastics and chemicals, irritating the respiratory system and contributing to long-term health problems.
Heavy Metals: Mercury, lead, and arsenic released from burning materials like power lines and buildings pose serious risks to health.
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs): Found in smoke from burning wood and fossil fuels, linked to cancer and DNA damage.
Mold and Mycotoxins: Mold thrives in damp, fire-damaged areas, releasing toxic spores (mycotoxins) that can cause respiratory issues, neurological problems, and chronic illnesses.
💧 Water and Environmental Contamination
Chemical Runoff: Toxic chemicals from burned structures can seep into water supplies, contaminating drinking water.
Heavy Metals in Water: Lead, arsenic, and other metals can leach into water systems, posing risks to human and animal health.
Mold Growth: Firefighting water saturates homes and debris, creating ideal conditions for mold to grow on walls, carpets, furniture, and other surfaces. Including your HVAC systems.
Sewage Contamination: Damaged septic systems can overflow, releasing harmful bacteria, viruses, and pathogens into the environment and water sources.
These toxins can linger in the air, water, and even inside homes—embedding in flooring, walls, HVAC systems, and other structures. The havoc they wreak on health is often life-changing, with effects lasting for months, years, or even a lifetime of debilitating chronic illnesses.
Tragically, many will lose their lives to the aftermath of these exposures. A powerful example of this is seen in the weeks, months and years following 9/11, where countless individuals suffered and died from the toxic exposures they faced during and after the event. Similar dangers arise from catastrophic events like this wildfire, underscoring the urgent need for vigilance and proactive care.
Even the healthiest individuals, including those living a plant-based, clean lifestyle, can be severely impacted or taken down when facing toxic exposures of this magnitude.
It’s a sobering reminder of the importance of prioritizing health, as being detoxed and living as healthily as possible becomes one’s only saving grace when toxins like this come into play.
I should know—I was one of them who barely survived mycotoxin poisoning. I truly believe that if I hadn’t been following a healthy, plant-based lifestyle, incorporating detoxification, fasting periods, and other holistic habits and modalities that I have maintained for decades, I wouldn’t be here today to write this post.
That’s a story for another day, but I share this to emphasize just how critical it is to act swiftly and prioritize your health and safety in the face of these hidden environmental dangers.
A strong, nourished, plant-based body provides the best foundation for resilience, but the dangers of these toxins demand decisive action and awareness to protect yourself and your loved ones.
💡 More Ways To Protect You & Your Loved Ones
Water Safety:
Use bottled or filtered water for drinking, cooking, and bathing if contamination is suspected.
Test well water or local water supplies for toxins, heavy metals, and bacteria.
Preventing Mold and Mycotoxin Exposure:
Dry out your home quickly using industrial fans and dehumidifiers.
Inspect for mold growth in damp areas, and discard water-damaged items that can’t be dried or cleaned.
Have your HVAC units cleaned and sterilized after first testing for possible exposures. Replace every filter in your home.
Consider professional mold remediation if contamination is extensive, but be aware that even thorough remediation doesn’t always eliminate health risks.
If mold and toxins persist, a complete tear-down and rebuild or moving entirely may be the safest option for long-term health.
Sewage Risks:
Avoid direct contact with contaminated water or soil.
Disinfect areas exposed to sewage using appropriate cleaning solutions.
Have septic systems inspected and repaired by professionals.
Overall Health Tips:
Stay hydrated and eat antioxidant-rich foods to help your body combat toxins.
Monitor for symptoms of respiratory issues, such as coughing, fatigue, or difficulty breathing, and seek medical care if needed.
