The U.S. soccer system isn’t completely broken, but it is arguably on the edge.
We can’t take players from youth to pro AND compete as a nation on the global stage. This World Cup was no different.
But fixing the foundation isn’t as complicated as people think. ⚽️
It comes down to 6 non-negotiable ingredients that we need to purposefully bake into local ecosystems.
I just dropped a short explainer vid on YouTube mapping out the recipe we need to develop world-class talent before the next World Cup cycle.
👇Comment “RECIPE” below and I’ll DM you the link to the Explainer video.
Link is also in my Bio.

Quarters 🧵This stage is where a straight “% of squad in Europe’s top leagues” model was lacking — every team left already cleared that bar. So I needed to fix the model based on what decided games so far. See 🧵below.👇

The thread🧵 — “The Exceptions Have Rules Now.” I considered some Round of 16 matchups “saturated” — meaning each had the same Europe-heavy profile, thus no real edge. I went back & actually counted the rosters. I was wrong more than I was right. Plus some extra thoughts.

Now through to the quarterfinals — the Round of 16 data supports the original hypothesis pretty well, with two juicy exceptions. Here is the wrap-up 🧵Quarters coming next!!!

Having played & coached in US/Europe, I mapped out what decides wins. My thesis: Squad % in Euro Top Flights is the #1 predictor of success. Combining coaching instincts w/AI data-modeling, I analyzed all Round of 16 matches. See the data, predictions & outliers in the full thread on X. Link in Bio. But I’ll post here later too.👇🧵

Since the dawn of time, human history has been wrecked by one major flaw: unchecked pride. Empires have fallen, wars have started, and millions of lives have been ruined because someone couldn’t swallow their ego and walk away.
In the heat of the moment, your brain often plays a dangerous trick on you. It tells you:
“If I back down, I look weak.”
“If I don’t react, they win.”
But that is a lie.
Real strength isn’t about proving you’re the toughest guy in the room over a minor insult, a dirty look, or a petty argument. Real strength is having total control over your own actions so a 10-second moment of anger doesn’t dictate the next 50 years of your life.
If you find yourself in a situation where things are starting to redline, here is how you take control:
🧠 The Internal Game (Fix Your Mindset)
— The 5-Second Pause: Before you open your mouth or ball up your fist, breathe. Ask yourself: Will this matter in a year? In a month? If the answer is no, do not trade your future for it.
— Redefine “Winning”: Winning isn’t knocking someone out or getting the last word. Winning is going home safe, keeping your freedom, and protecting your goals.
— Drop the Audience: If people are watching, your ego will tell you to put on a show. Recognize that the crowd doesn’t care about your safety—they just want entertainment. Don’t give it to them.
🛑 The External Game (Diffusing the Bomb)
— Use a Cool-Down Phrase: You don’t have to apologize if you didn’t do anything wrong, but you can kill the tension instantly. A simple, calm, “It’s all good, man,” or “It’s not that deep, let’s just drop it,” gives both sides an exit strategy.
— Put Distance Between You: Physically take steps back. Changing the physical space changes the dynamic of the conflict.
— Check the Weapons: Never, ever introduce a weapon into a fistfight or an argument. The second a weapon appears, common sense goes out the window, and a temporary mistake becomes a permanent tragedy.
The Bottom Line:
Walking away isn’t cowardice; it’s strategy. It means you value your life, your family, and your future more than someone else’s opinion.
