Today I heard the news that Fargo has crossed over the rainbow bridge, and it hit harder than I expected.
From his early days in Lusaka to tracking through the Lower Zambezi and finally working the wilds of Gonarezhou, Fargo gave everything to conservation. Trained in detection and tracking, he was sharp, driven, and one of the most trainable dogs Iβve ever had the privilege to work with.
He was full of life and characterβtruly unforgettable. Itβs been a while since we worked together, but the bond never fades.
A huge thank you to the incredible team at Gonarezhou for giving him the farewell he deserved, buried with honour and ceremony, the dog unit standing in full parade.
Rest easy, Fargo. You were one of the greats. πΎ

***End of Watch***
Beno truly stood out as an exceptional canine companion. His absence will undeniably create a significant void within the program, and his unique presence will be impossible to replace.
Beno's capabilities were evident from the early stages of the program. During the third week of training, alongside his handler, he was deployed to apprehend a suspected poaching group engaged in illegal rhino hunting. Beno's swift tracking led to the identification and arrest of one of the suspects. On that day, thanks to Beno's efforts, a rhino's life was spared. The tales of Beno's remarkable contributions to conservation are numerous and heartwarming. He was a truly wonderful dog who dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his work. His absence will be deeply felt and he will be greatly missed.

Awesome job by an awesome team!
Maine Game Warden K9 Gordon and Maine Game Warden Preston Pomerleau located a missing 67-year-old man with dementia last night after he had wandered away from home in Mattawamkeag.
The man was reported missing by his son last night at 11:45pm and Maine Game Wardens and Penobscot Sheriffβs Deputies responded to search the area.
Two Game Warden K9s joined the search at approximately 3:30 this morning. K9 Gordon picked up a scent which was tracked into the woods where they found the the man, coherent but weak and covered in bug bites.
Pomerleau gave him some water, and with assistance, was able to walk him out of the woods where he was medically cleared, and brought home to his son.

END OF WATCH
Last week we lost one of our four legged partners.
At a check point a few years ago, Alex and his handler were searching vehicles. A young girl traveling with her family heard Alexβs handler talking to her parents. Alex searched their vehicle and then they went on their way only to return a few hours later. Alex and his handler were still there, reminding would be poachers that it was not wise to mess around with the βWisemanβ. The little girl had been so impressed by her first encounter that she had drawn a picture. Grateful for the hard work from Alex and his team.
En route back from operations the vehicle was in a traffic accident and ended up off the road. Three men and four dogs were inside. If it wasnβt for the sturdy design of the kennels the situation would have been much worse. Unfortunately our βWisemanβ Alex died on the way to the veterinarian. All other dogs and handlers are fine with a few minor bumps and bruises.
Alex had a successful time with Namibiaβs Ministry of Environment Forestry and Tourism. He helped the team with countless illegal wildlife product seizures. His goofy attitude was always noticed and people tended to migrate towards him. He epitomized the work hard, play hard attitude. When called for, he was there, reliable as ever.
No doubt, Alex clumsily ran over the rainbow bridge to all the treats and toys he could muster. We know he still has our backβ¦ but he knows he can rest easyβ¦
β¦weβll take it from here pal.

Perspectives of K9 tracking in an urban environment often produce a binary response of βpossibleβ or βnot possibleβ.
With our training approach, it is absolutely possible. Some dogs might take longer than othersβ¦. Regardless, by the time you have finished our K9 tracking and trailing course you will have the tools to take your dog to the next level.
Indirectly you will find improvements in other areas. Your dog will range out better, find the decoy more efficiently, have better discrimination of odors, identify a hidden threat quicker and be physically fitter.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife manages and protects Californiaβs wildlife, plants, trees, and habitats. They are responsible for regulatory enforcement and management of related recreational, commercial, scientific, and educational uses. On top of all this, the department prevents illegal poaching across the state.
Invictus K9 is here in California teaching a tracking course during one of the wettest winters in history! Challenge accepted! These handlers are tried and tested with some amazing stats to back it up with. Pair that with some studies showing that one well-trained dog can save approximately 800 personnel hours per year - the CDFW is investing in the training - making use of dogs to quickly help them locate suspects, find missing people and detect concealed evidence.
We are grateful to have been asked here for the next couple of weeks sharing ideas and training with these formidable teams in some pretty nice training areas. More to come!
