For individuals with IDD, could virtual reality become another place to safely practice skills for the real world? 🥽

Research is beginning to give us some fascinating answers.

A peer-reviewed study examined immersive VR training in 32 adults with intellectual disabilities. Participants practiced sorting everyday waste items into the appropriate bins inside a virtual environment.

Within 10 training sessions, 19 of the 32 participants—or 59.4%—reached the researchers’ learning target of approximately 90% accuracy.

But what happened outside of VR is especially interesting.

Participants demonstrated significant improvement on the real-world version of the task after training, and those improvements were still present at a delayed assessment. Researchers concluded that VR facilitated learning for most participants and demonstrated evidence of real-world transfer + skill generalization.

More recent research continues to explore this potential. A 2024 study comparing immersive VR with a non-immersive virtual environment found that the immersive group performed significantly better on a real-world assessment after training + at a one-week follow-up.

This is the kind of research that helps inform how we think about technology at the UNIFIED Esports League.

Inside our Technology Centers, VR is part of a broader technology education environment supported by IDD-trained coaches. Technology provides the opportunity to explore. Our coaches provide the human guidance, encouragement + individualized support around that experience.

And importantly, emerging research doesn't mean VR works equally for every individual or every skill. Research published in 2025 found improvements in VR performance while also identifying limitations in transferring some cognitive-motor skills into real-world tasks—reinforcing why technology should be thoughtfully integrated with practical learning + individualized support.

A great program starts with the people families trust to support their loved ones. 💙

That’s why choosing a UNIFIED coach is something we take seriously.

In this video, UESL CEO Matthew Iske shares a little more about what happens behind the scenes before a coach begins supporting clients inside one of our Technology Centers.

Our staff members are selected in part for their passion for helping individuals with IDD grow. Many come from educational backgrounds, and every coach goes through UNIFIED’s internal IDD-focused training process.

That training was developed with guidance from a therapist with more than 25 years of experience and focuses on the supports + strategies our coaches can use to meet individuals where they are.

Because our goal isn’t to ask every client to grow in the same way.

Our programs are intentionally structured to give each individual a safe + supportive environment where they can work toward their own goals—whether that means communicating with a teammate, building confidence, practicing sportsmanship, exploring a new technology, developing greater independence or simply becoming more comfortable connecting with others.

And with a 1:3 coach-to-client ratio, coaches have the opportunity to know the individuals on their team, celebrate their progress + provide individualized support along the way.

If you’ve been wondering whether UESL could be a good fit for your loved one, come experience it before making a decision.

Families can schedule a one-on-one tour of a UNIFIED Technology Center in San Diego or Imperial County to explore our technologies, meet coaches + current clients, see the program in action + ask all the questions you need.

There are families throughout our communities looking for something incredibly important: a place where their loved one can feel supported, make friends, explore their interests + continue growing. 💙

We want to help bring that resource closer to home.

The UNIFIED Esports League is currently seeking schools, districts + community organizations interested in becoming location partners for future UNIFIED Technology Centers across San Diego + Imperial Counties.

So, what exactly does that mean?

A location partner provides the physical space where a UNIFIED Technology Center can take root. UESL brings our specialized program model into that environment, creating a space where individuals with intellectual + developmental disabilities can engage with technology while developing communication, teamwork, confidence, social-emotional skills + meaningful relationships.

Inside our programs, clients are supported by IDD-trained coaches at a 1:3 coach-to-client ratio and given opportunities to explore technology including gaming systems, PCs, VR, simulators, graphic design + more.

But the technology is only part of the story.

A Technology Center is also a place to belong.

It’s where someone can meet a teammate. Practice navigating a disagreement. Discover a new interest. Celebrate an accomplishment. Build confidence through repetition. Or simply have a community where they look forward to showing up.

Every new location partnership helps us work toward making those opportunities accessible to more IDD individuals + families.

🏫 If you are part of a school, district or organization that could benefit from access to a Technology Center + specialized IDD programming, we would love to hear from you.

And if someone immediately came to mind while reading this, help us make the connection. Tag them in the comments or forward this post directly to them. One introduction could help open the door to an entirely new community.

A good coach can teach you how to play.

The right coach can help you discover what you’re capable of. 💜

When you listen to our UNIFIED coaches talk about their work, you hear very little about scores or winning.

You hear them talk about people.

About understanding the challenges individuals with IDD may face. About helping clients grow. About creating a place to make friends, become part of a team + feel comfortable being who they are.

That human connection matters because no two clients come to UNIFIED with exactly the same strengths, goals or support needs.

Our 1:3 coach-to-client ratio gives coaches the opportunity to know the individuals they support. Through IDD-focused training + therapist-informed education, coaches learn strategies for creating a supportive environment while encouraging clients to keep trying, communicating, problem-solving + becoming more independent.

Each client also has an Individualized Technology Education Plan (ITEP) that helps guide individualized goals through gaming + technology experiences.

Then, through progress reports, families receive insight into the skills, milestones + growth our team is seeing.

Technology gives us an incredible way to engage.

The relationship between a coach + client helps turn those experiences into opportunities for meaningful development.

For a family searching for the right support, location matters.

A program can only make a difference if families can actually access it—which is why expanding UNIFIED Technology Centers into more San Diego communities is such an important part of our mission. 💜

We’re excited to share our three newest locations:

🎮 San Ysidro — Open Now
🎮 Chula Vista — Coming Soon
🎮 Del Mar — Collecting Interest

UNIFIED was built to create more than a place to play video games. Our research-backed program uses gaming + technology as engaging tools to support social-emotional growth, confidence, communication, teamwork, sportsmanship + meaningful life skills for individuals with intellectual + developmental disabilities.

Clients receive individualized support from IDD-trained coaches, with a 1:3 coach-to-client ratio designed to create opportunities for genuine connection + growth.

Every new center means another community where families can find a space created with their loved ones in mind.

A beanbag, a co****le board + a room full of teammates. Sometimes, that’s where meaningful progress happens. 💜

This recent moment from our San Ysidro team captures something important about the UNIFIED Esports League: although technology is a major part of what we do, our program is about much more than time spent on a screen.

Every client arrives with different strengths, goals, interests + support needs. Progress might mean learning a new technology skill for one person. For another, it might mean joining a group activity, waiting for a turn, handling a missed shot, encouraging a teammate, or becoming more comfortable connecting with peers.

Our session structure creates space for all of it.

Technology exploration + structured play are balanced with opportunities to recharge, move, socialize, practice sportsmanship + connect as a team. Our Healthy Gamer philosophy reinforces the idea that caring for the person behind the player matters, too:

Healthy Body + Healthy Mind = Good Gamer.

And sometimes, the best way to understand that difference is to experience it yourself.

For an SDRC family, finding the right service is only part of the equation.

It also needs to be accessible.

UNIFIED Esports League is an **approved vendor of the San Diego Regional Center**, allowing eligible SDRC clients to participate in our gaming + technology education program with **zero fees for the client + their family**. 🎮💙

That means families can access a program intentionally created to support individuals with intellectual + developmental disabilities through shared interests, individualized guidance + community.

Inside a UNIFIED Technology Center, clients have opportunities to:

🎮 Build friendships around shared interests
💻 Explore gaming + technology
💬 Practice communication + social-emotional skills
🤝 Experience teamwork + sportsmanship
🌱 Develop confidence + greater independence
🧠 Learn within a structured, individualized environment

Our IDD-trained coaches + 1:3 coach-to-client ratio help create an environment where clients can be supported as individuals while becoming part of something bigger: a team.

But accessibility isn't only about funding.

A program also has to be close enough for families to use it.

That’s one reason UNIFIED continues working to expand our network of Technology Centers throughout the San Diego Regional Center service area. More locations can mean shorter distances, more available program opportunities + more IDD families gaining access to community-based support.

Ask a young gamer why they want to join an esports program + you might expect to hear about their favorite games.

And we did.

🎮 Mario Kart.
🎮 Super Smash Bros.

Then our client added one more reason:

"Making new friends.” 💙

That’s the part we keep thinking about.

Shared interests can make connecting with someone new feel a little more natural. Instead of starting with “What should we talk about?”, two clients can start with a controller, a favorite character, a race, a match or a simple invitation to play.

At UNIFIED Esports League, our program is intentionally structured to create opportunities for those interactions.

Our IDD-trained coaches support clients throughout sessions + can help encourage connections between players—pairing shared interests, facilitating teamwork, reinforcing communication + helping clients navigate the social moments that naturally happen through play.

And with a 1:3 coach-to-client ratio, coaches have the opportunity to get to know the people they're supporting.

Gaming is only one piece of what happens inside a UNIFIED Technology Center.

Clients are also exploring technology, practicing life + social-emotional skills, learning sportsmanship, working alongside teammates + becoming part of a community.

For some clients, that community might begin with their favorite game.

For others, it might begin with meeting one person they can't wait to see again next session.

Both matter.
