On Memorial Day (Monday, May 27th), Su Barry, Samuel Lyn, Joseph Lavelle and I will, for the fourth straight year, be official hosts of the Murph Challenge. We became official hosts for the first-time in 2021 and have had a great turnout the past 3 years raising money for the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Scholarship Fund.
In order to accommodate the growing number of participants, this year we have partnered with Bear Republic Cross-Fit located at 840 G St, San Diego, CA 92101. Our start time is 9 AM - still plenty early enough for everyone to finish the event and still make it out for routine Saturday activities. Heck, last year Chris Hendricks did double duty while wearing a weighted vest before Sam Lynn was even halfway done his first round of pushups!
Please register using this link https://themurphchallenge.com Please also be sure to designate "Bear Republic - MurphSD" as your gym in the designated area for that selection (this registration information will be up by Monday, May 12th), so that we can track all of the registrations. Those registration fees go directly to the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Scholarship Fund and the Su Barry Foundation has generously agreed to once again donate and additional $25 for each person that shows up (up to $2,500)!
What is the Murph, you ask? The Murph is a cross-fit workout created by Legendary US Navy Seal Lt. Michael P. Murphy, who sacrificed his life on the battlefields of Afghanistan in 2005 and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the Silver Star and the Purple Heart for his bravery and selflessness.
Technically, to do it the way Lt. Murphy did it, you have to put on a 25-pound weighted visit or 25 lbs of body armor. Then you complete the following (in any order):
1 mile run
100 pull ups
200 push ups
300 squats
1 mile run
However, very few of us wear a weighted vest and reasonable accommodations are permissible for people who cannot do certain exercises or have other accommodation needs. In other words, do what you can and don't worry about anything else. What matters is that you showed up for a good cause and did something healthy and positive with your colleagues and peers.
We look forward to seeing you at Bear Republic Cross-Fit at 9 AM on Monday the 27th. Please come early to allow time for you to sign a waiver and don't worry about paying any fees at the door - as those are being covered by Su Barry via her Foundation.

The event will start at 9:00 am sharp, and participants are asked to come early to sign their waiver.

The Murph:
1-mile run
100 pull-ups

Same as last year! On Memorial Day (May 29, 2023), we'll once again be hosting the Murph Challenge.
Whether you are in tip top shape or your physique is in the cellar, come do something positive on Memorial Day in honor of a remarkable young man who gave his life fighting for his Country and for the charity named in his honor.
The event will be hosted at the same location as the last couple of years: the San Diego Embarcadero area, near the Symphony Shell.

On Memorial Day (May 30, 2022), Andrew Chivinski, Su Barry, Conor Hulburt, and Samuel Lyn will once again be hosting the Murph Challenge.
We had a great turnout last year and raised $3,862 for the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Scholarship Fund. We hope to smash that mark this year, so please, whether you are in tip top shape or your physique is in the cellar, come do something positive on Memorial Day in honor of a remarkable young man who gave his life fighting for his Country and for the charity named in his honor.

MURPH TRAINING DAY 37:
10 Rounds For Time:
10 Pull-Ups
10 Sit-Ups
10 Air-Squats
Tomorrow (Tuesday) is Day 37.
Beginners, attempt the first few reps (3-5) of pull-ups every round, count your failed reps, finish the pull-ups in each round with a band. To scale up, add a kettlebell to the air squats or wear a 20lb vest or pack.

Tomorrow (Monday) is Day 36, which means we're just TWO WEEKS AWAY from Memorial Day. Don't give up--keep training! To scale this workout up, wear a 20lb vest or pack.
Important Reminder: Official Murph Challenge registration and our Worldwide Leaderboard will remain open until July 31st. If you cannot complete The Murph Challenge over Memorial Day weekend, you will still have the opportunity to register and until the end of July.
