Another emotional promotion yesterday. Congrats to our new Poway Kenpo Black Belts and to everyone promoting up to higher ranks.

I remember with Mr. B was promote to 5th and he started wearing a bar. I wanted to be that one day, I wanted to be that good one day, I wanted to keep living my Kenpo dream and walk my Kenpo path. Bar achieved ... path still unfolding.

Thank you Masters and Grand Masters for taking the time to participate in our promotion. Your presence is an honor for us and I am always grateful for the wisdom you pass along.

Leslie Morgan Steiner: Why domestic violence victims don't leave

A friend of mine shared this wonder short talk about domestic violence.

Leslie Morgan Steiner was in "crazy love" -- that is, madly in love with a man who routinely abused her and threatened her life. Steiner tells the dark story...

Can you see yourself in action? What would you do if…? Take some time to visualize possible scenarios this week. You can do it while walking the dog, grocery shopping, working out at the gym, walking to the parking garage, anywhere. Seeing yourself in action can help you react more quickly if ever necessary.

Take your internet safety and that of your children seriously. Talk to your kids and think about the examples you set. Check out online educational resources such as (fun and games);; and

Walk with confidence, don’t LOOK like a victim. Look at people as you pass them, not at the ground. Be aware of your surroundings and potential escape paths. Being aware shows and makes you look less like an easy target.

Have your keys in hand when walking to your vehicle. Don’t worry about trying to hold them between your knuckles, just hold your car key between your thumb and fingers like you would when opening the door. If you need to use it as a weapon, simply jab it into the face of an attacker. Great targets for keys are eyes and up the nose.

Do you know your exits? Locate the exits everywhere you go. Knowing the exits is key to a quick escape.

Being social has it's dangers. Please be careful when meeting people through social media. Just today there were two disturbing stories on the news, one about a kidnapper posing as an actor from the Twilight movies and another on a movie date with someone they met on Christian Mingle.

I say it in my seminars ... just because they're cute doesn't mean they aren't a predator. Please be careful out there.

Great day to you warrior. Embrace who you are and not what society wants to label you as.

The Freaks Come Out at Night (remember that song?) Spring is the universal mating season and some people take that a little too far. Sometimes profiling is a wonderful tool. If they look like a freak, act like a freak, and talk like a freak (no matter how good looking they are), they are probably a freak. Let's not let good looks erase our intuition and common sense.

You are beautiful, strong, smart, and fierce. Be yourself today and every day.

Exercise your memory. How many characteristics can you remember about the strangers you see this week? Can you remember at least 4 of the following?

Hair Color
Height (plus or minus inches relative to you)
Tattoos or Scars
Clothing, Glasses, Jewelry, Shoes

Test yourself a few moments after seeing them. Test each other if you're with friends or family.
Take a moment to check doors and windows before leaving the house. Lock doors vulnerable to walk-up intrusion.

Spring is upon us. Take a moment to clean out that massive bag you are carrying around, you know who I'm talking to :) If you put something in your bag and can't find it quickly it's time to clean and organize. Consider getting a carabineer for your keys to clip your keys to the outside of your bag. This way you can have quick, unobstructed access to you keys at any time.

Happy St. Daddy's Day. Have a green beer or two or three, but don't drink alone and have a safe way home. Watch out for leprechauns!

Daylight savings is here. Are there any morning routines you need to alter until we get more sunlight? Even if you’re good to go with the temporary darker mornings, this is a good time to change up your routine a little.

Self evaluation today. Do you have any habits that place you at risk? Take a moment to identify these practices and take corrective steps to minimize potential risk.

Movie Lesson. Trust your instincts. Jaime Lee Curtis in Blue Steel (yeah, it’s an old one) falls for a serial killer who is infatuated with her. After a date she has a bad dream about him letting her fall out of a helicopter. She doesn’t heed her instincts and soon finds herself in the worst situations. If you feel someone may not be honorable or trustworthy, act on it and stay away from them in private scenarios. Use caution when considering spending time with them in any private setting.

Take your internet safety and that of your children seriously. Talk to your kids and think about the examples you set. Check out online educational resources such as (fun and games);; and

We all love music and technology is helping us to listen to just the music and nothing else. How safe would you be without your ability to hear things around you when walking, running, or biking alone? When not in gym, seriously consider tuning everything but the music out. You are at risk when you are unaware of your surroundings.

Valentine’s day is just around the corner and a lot of us are looking for that special someone. Internet dating seems to have become the norm. Although it is sometimes hard to meet new people in social settings, consider joining a group of singles online instead of trying to date one-to-one. Group events give you more opportunity to find that special someone, and eliminates risk associated with meeting a stranger for the first time. If you have already been talking with someone online, consider meeting them in a public, well-lit location. No dark corners for doing dark deeds (what movie?).

Practice a basic technique every day for one week. You’ll feel more confident about your movement and ex*****on. This week practice thumb gouges. Use a yoga ball, kick-ball, firm pillows, anything with a little resistance. Balls work well because you can use your fingers to anchor your grip. Press your thumbs inward and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat as desired, such as during commercial breaks.
