Bheemashakti Yoga School

A yoga collective for teachers and experienced students that offers a training system to open areas of the body otherwise difficult to do so through vinyasa.

Jonathan Patriarca, founder of Bheemashakti Yoga System, was a long time practitioner of yoga. With a firm background in medicine, as a registered nurse, he had the honor of studying with masters like Pattabi Jois, David Swensen, Ganga White, Rudra Dev, and his most recent teacher H.R. Suresh. Through his studies under H.R. Suresh, in India for five years, Jonathan was introduced to the ancient system of progressively opening and strengthening through kriya and kapalabhati techniques. Jonathan is the only Westerner to bring this system to the West and to have further developed it to make yoga accessible to all body types--accelerating the opening, strengthening, and energizing of all bodies within a short period of time. Jonathan lived in San Diego, California where he has a loyal following of successful Bheemashakti practitioners.

Curious about what a mandala is?
▪️
A mandala is a cycle of disciplined sadhana that follows the cycles of nature. Students practice early every morning for either 21 or 48 day cycles (this coming mandala is 21 days).
▫️
We have found this method to be an effective way to balance and energize the body.

Too often we become reliant on our teachers to guide us every step of the way in our practice.

At the BYS we prepare students to take their practice into their own hands, allowing them to find what their body needs through self discovery.

Part of the journey is coming to an understanding that you have everything within you already, you just need to see it to believe it.

What if a student practices regularly, puts in sustained hard work, but is unable to achieve his/her goals? Some teachers state, “It is not about achieving goals, but being present in the practice. I think this is true but I believe most Westerners want to improve. I believe it is not how good you are but how much you improve (if improvement is desired). I think this is the same with anything in life, in order to improve, one must honestly experience where they are.” - Jonathan Patriarca

Have you ever experimented with Kapalabhati breathing in your practice?

Kapalabhati is also known as “Shining Skull” breath, and is used to detoxify the systems of the body. The most noticeable difference after practicing this breath is the clarifying of mental energies. Kapalabhati trains the abdominal region to master bandha control which is important for advanced yoga practice.

I want to tell everyone about how I was so weak and stiff in some places, weak and floppy in others and now my body is once more the finely tuned instrument it was when I was a martial artist. One does NOT have to stew on a plateau for months or years before seeing progress in the physical practice. One can move forwards and grow with CORRECT practice.

As the old Indian instruction says "Colors become more colors and sounds more sounds", because everything gains in depth, unity, harmony and intensity. It is the supra-conscious function, which establishes us in our most intimate nature, that which is hidden behind the gross mask of the ego, and therefore the only one that, free from egocentric interpretations, can fully see the facts and phenomena. Value the process and not just the end; appreciate the trip not just the goal.

One thing that we really focus on as a school is to tailor the yoga practice to the student, rather than trying to make the student conform into the ideal of what a “yogi” is. Because there is no such thing.

Little has been lost in the progression of Bheemashakti Yoga over the past fifteen years, and you will find the method unique but also very effective.

What does strength look like to you?

We are all strong in different ways. The key is to find what makes you stronger, and practice that daily. When we practice physical exercises we start to see things about ourselves that we never knew were there...

The drive we have to push our limits, or the determination we have to finish something we started.

Like completing a 21 day mandala with the BYS. This takes physical strength, endurance, and flexibility, but most importantly it takes mental strength. When we can master our mind we can master our surroundings. #mindovermatter
