Can you imagine the boredom this guy endured before he thought of doing this? Mental illness is a serious thing.

So something wonderful happened to me tonight. As I was in the process of setting up the first night of our Racquetball League held at LA Fitness 4S-Ranch, I saw one of our member/players setup a folding table and place a big bag on it. In the back of my mind I'm thinking, "I hope they spoke to Corporate first, and got the okay before they start selling their Wonder Products in front of court #2".
As I stared at the cupcakes that were being brought out onto the table, and the helium filled ballons rising towards the great expanse of LA Fitness' ceilings, a sudden chill touched my spine. They were not setting up to sell something, rather they were getting ready for a celebration of some sort.
I approached the table and asked the person, who was setting all this up, what was going on? They nonchalantly said to wait a few minutes and they will let me know. As my aging eyes look skyward towards the balloons, my mind was still not comprehending what was going on. I briefly read "Happy..." and was interrupted when I noticed that everybody in our Racquetball League gathered around the table.
I turned around, faced everybody and wondered if maybe I'm actually in one of those Zombie movies that I've been watching on cable. All of a sudden, Amy (Rotweiler) Rothermel gets up and says something to the effect that they wanted to do something for me for all the unselfish things I've done for them these past years. That was when I looked up towards the balloons and finished reading "Happy Birthday".
I felt a vortex of emotion trying to overtake me, but it took Herculean strength not to start shedding a tear at that point. I was truly dumb-struck (actually dumb comes fairly easy to me) and still didn't realize why anybody would do this for me. Amy had graciously stated how lucky they all were with the all the time and effort I give to the Racquetball Leagues and also the much sought after wisdom and laughter I offer to those that wish to listen and chuckle.
I grunted back that it was me that was the lucky one to have the opportunity to give back to such appreciative and enthusiastic Racquetball players. I have been playing since the mid-1970's and have met many good people throughout my Racquetball career. I always enjoy telling the many stories that have crossed my life playing Racquetball. How Jeff Conine exploded through a glass Racquetball door, how I always used to beat the #4 Racquetball Professional all the time, how Charlie Brumfield used to play against opponents using a shoe. There are too many stories to mention.
But the most important story I will tell from this point on, is how a group of Racquetball enthusiasts got together, got some delicious cupcakes and fruit, wonderful Birthday gifts, and sang Happy Birthday to me. Thank you everybody for such a surprise tonight. Thank you for giving me this wonderful memory that I shall treasure forever. In closing, and as I always say in Racquetball, "Play Hard, Hit Low, Play Fair". Oh by the way, Chris and Amy, I'm gonna pinch you guys when you least expect it!
