Continuing on our mini yoga therapy for #scoliosis series! So what happens when you or your student/client has two prominent curves in their spine? This version of #sideplank with one lifted leg is a great option! pulling the yoga strap with the top arm helps to sidebend the upper trunk towards the ceiling, which in turn helps to elongate the muscles on the side of the torso that is closer to the floor. The goal here is to work both sides of the curvatures-elongating the concave side, while strengthening the convex side of each of the scoliotic curves. PS-it’s definitely a #sneakystrengthyoga pose 🔥 the yoga strap makes this look easy😉 Enjoy!

Side plank + Scoliosis = 👑
From @rachelkrentzman book, Scoliosis, Yoga Therapy, and the Art of Letting Go:
Side plank is an excellent pose that can help strengthen the Quadratus Lumborum on the convex side of the curve and help to pull the spine away from the concavity towards a more neutral position. This pose is especially good for scoliosis in the lumbar curve. #sideplank does require quite a bit of strength and balance, especially in the shoulder and wrist of the supporting hand. If inaccessible due to limitations or injuries, here are some other alternatives:

* Side plank on forearm: reduces pressure on the wrist, Good if you have carpal tunnel syndrome or tennis elbow
* Side plank with upper arm on blocks: takes some of the weight off the supporting arm and unweights the shoulder
* Forearm plank with knees bent: makes it easier to lift the pelvis away from the floor
* Forearm plank with legs and hips supported on the ground: this variation helps build strength on the lower side of the trunk

Hope everyone had a fun Halloween! In preparation for our Hip and Knee workshop in 7 days(!!) I wanted to share this fun but challenging version of crescent/high lunge. The block against the shin provides my front leg stability to bend my front knee deeper while also giving me some feedback about my hip alignment and achieving a great stretch for my hip flexor and quad muscles. I can easily find my body’s “version “ of the pose without overloading it. Once you get the hips aligned, don’t forget to align your head and neck, so they can be part of the action too! Hands on the wall for balance support and/or keeping the shoulders engaged.

Growing up as a dancer/gymnast, they ALWAYS did 😬
This version of bridge pose intentionally helps to reduce and/or eliminate pain/strain by calling in a muscle my patients and students have heard me lovingly refer to as the “side butt” aka the GLUTEUS MEDIUS. This muscle’s job is to: Extend, ABDuct, and Internally rotate the hip, which are the hip actions we are striving for in bridge pose. When we engage the #glutmed to lift the hips and stabilize the pelvis in the air with the belted yoga strap, the spinal muscles no longer have to work quite so hard on their own and thus, no strain!! This version of #bridgepose is great for #lowerbackpain as well as SI Joint pain.

Use your exhale to guide your rib cage and shoulder blade towards the floor as you deepen into the rotation. Enjoy!

#yogachairs are such great tools! Here is a simple thoracic mobility exercise that you can try on just about any chair. Great for improving thoracic extension/ease with backbends, opening the chest and shoulder mobility. Coordinate the movement with your breathe: INHALE= lift hips, EXHALE= lower hips.
Safety first, always! You can place the edge of the chair just about anywhere on the mid/upper back, and try mobilizing different sections of your spine by adjusting your position on the chair. 5-6 reps per area as needed 😅
