TWO-FER TUESDAY: Supersets for shapely shoulders.
Many people describe a superset as one movement immediately followed by a second, regardless of whether the movements involve the same or different muscle groups. I consider a superset to be two consecutive movements that involve at least one of the same muscle groups. Supersetting increases the muscles time under tension and can bring about muscle exhaustion faster. Muscle, when worked to exhaustion and given adequate nutrition and rest will increase its strength, size and endurance.

In the video example (taken from my Pocket Personal Trainer digital training program) I'm beginning with the barbell upright row, a compound movement that also recruits the medial delts along with the trapezius muscles and biceps. I then superset it with the dumbbell side raise, a single joint movement that primarily recruits the medial deltoids. A. Super-setting the two movements causes an increase in the medial delts’ time under tension.
You can perform a single joint movement followed immediately by a compound movement, or vice versa.

Lindsey D. Lindsey has lost 13 lbs of bodyfat and reduced her abdominal circumference by 4 inches. She attributes her success to staying consistent with her workouts (three days a week) and making small changes to her nutrition, specifically she added protein to every meal and snack throughout the day. This not only helped her feel fuller longer, it also helped regulate her blood sugar, which makes fat burning much easier. Great job Lindsey!!!

***WEDNESDAY WARRIOR***
Brent B.
Brent lost 8 lbs of body fat and gained 4 lbs of muscle mass in just 8 weeks!
He did it by lifting weights with me twice a week and running 1-3 miles 4x per week. He completely changed the way he ate, sticking to a consistent routine of eating 4-5x a day, adding more vegetables to his meals.
He also decreased his coffee intake dramatically, drinking water frequently throughout the day.
Brent says, "I recently completed my semi-annual fitness assessment for the Navy and improved on every aspect of the test: push-up, sit up and most notably the 1.5 mile run - I shaved off 2 minutes and 46 seconds off my time!"
Brent is also our Beach Body Challenge Winner! He received a $250 check from The Private Gym for his efforts!
Way to go Brent!!!

***MONDAY MOTIVATION***

Shame is not the same as guilt. Guilt is feeling bad for doing something that you shouldn’t have done, whereas shame is feeling that you are inherently bad. Growing up I was severely neglected and I developed a strong sense of shame very early in life. This manifested into feeling “less than” and drinking alcohol was my solution to lessen that feeling. But alcohol is a rapacious creditor and for every instance it temporary reduced my shame, it would cause me to do things that would increase it.
Once I finally hit my bottom and began the journey to recovery, I began the process of learning to forgive myself and my parents and release shame. This has opened the door to being able to take better care of myself; I stopped people pleasing, quit worrying so much about what others think of me, eat foods that nurture my body, exercise to keep my body strong and healthy, take time to rest and relax, have fun, help others, say NO when necessary without feeling bad. It’s a work in progress, but loving yourself is the BEST thing you can do for yourself.
So this Monday, I invite you to practice the art of self-love. YOU ARE SO WORTH IT. ❤️❤️❤️❤️💪🏻😍👊🏻

I struggled with my weight all my life, even in sobriety. At age 66 and 5 foot 1, 250 pounds became totally overwhelming and I decided to try gastric bypass surgery. My surgeon made it clear that I had to join a gym. I wanted something personal as I had never been to a gym in my life! The Private Gym was perfect for me.

I joined in November of 2014, just two weeks after my surgery. Initially I had some restrictions that Natalie had to work around, but before long I was able to do the workout routines that she created for me.

The combination of restricted eating along with the weight training and cardio that Natalie prescribed gave me the success that I have always longed for. I feel great and I can look in the mirror now. I couldn't stand to look at myself before. My confidence and attitude are greatly improved. I know I would not have been so successful without the gym experience. My doctor even agreed that she had not seen such dramatic improvements in muscle tone and fat loss!

***MONDAY MOTIVATION***
Today I challenge you to do 20 mins of mindful exercise every day this week. And it doesn’t matter what kind of exercise you choose. Maybe try something new! The goal is to focus on being in your body. Focus on how your body feels. Focus on your breathing. This practice grounds you emotionally and reduces anxiety and stress, not to mention strengthens your immune system, improves your heart health and if you’re using resistance training, helps you build muscular strength and endurance too. Please share your results in the comments! 💪🏻😍

****WEDNESDAY WARRIOR****
Sandrine C. Sandrine started working with me earlier this year after she’d been traveling for several months. She was anxious to get back into the gym and was looking for someone to help her build up her strength and work around some challenges with her right hip, which made it difficult for her to do certain movements.
I came up with a game plan and this is the result!

COV-Identity crisis!!!
I’ve been feeling like I’m losing my sense of identity. Are you feeling the same way?

Initially the shutdown felt like a gift. Finally, an opportunity to take a breather from the day-to-day grind and work on my online fitness training project. I expected it to be over in a couple of weeks so I set out to work on my online program. But now it’s been over two months!!! I haven’t been able to train with my clients in person, I’ve had very little interaction with anyone socially and spent more time than I care to on the web with zoom and social media.

Im sure you already know that wellness consists of the mind, body and spirit and how important it is to nurture all of these three elements and how they are all intertwined.
And how this pandemic has restricted a lot of these practices for many of us.
Many of us aren’t working, so our sense of purpose has been affected.
Many of us can’t go to the gym to relieve stress and take care of our physical health.
Many of us are isolated, so our in-person connection has been affected.
And a lot of us are feeling a sense of hopelessness and losing faith in a power greater than ourselves.

It got so bad for me last week that I literally began experience hot flashes and moments of extreme panic. I had to take some action.

Here are the steps I took which I want to share with you as an opportunity to help you if you are experiencing some of the same issues.

1. Determine what I can and cannot control.
When I recite the serenity prayer, “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference”, It immediately gives me the ability to see what’s mine and what’s not. I cannot control when my gym will be open, or whether my physical business will survive.
What I can control is making sure that I have a good marketing plan of action, make sure that I keep the place ready to open daily and take care of any business related needs.
I cannot control the COV-ID pandemic and its repercussions.

2. Focus on what I can control:
Physical health
Emotional health
Spiritual health

I can still workout, eat regularly, (I was skipping meals because I would be too busy running myself ragged to eat, which made my anxiety and stress worse, because my body was reacting from a place of starvation) and fuel my body with healthy, nutrient dense foods. I also make sure I’m hydrated and limit my caffeine intake.

I can meditate. Just 10 minutes a day of guided meditation first thing in the morning can change the tone from one of trepidation to calm. Diaphragmic breathing also helps my body relax.
I can go outside and be in nature. This always makes me feel more centered. I can attend an AA meeting through Zoom. I can connect with like-minded individuals and hear how they are coping and know that I am not alone.

I can make time for rest and relaxation. I can play with my dogs and be outside in nature.

So, for today’s Monday Motivation I invite you to consider what you can and can’t control, what you want to be and feel and what steps you can take to get there. And, consider who you can call on to help you. I recently hired a business coach as I know I can’t grow my online business on my own within any particular timeframe and hiring someone keeps me accountable. You may need the same thing for your physical practice (exercise and nutrition) or for meditation and bodywork. You also may want to get involved in a support group to hold you accountable and give you direction and community.

I hope this helps you.

***FEEL GOOD FRIDAY***
Connecting with animals always nourishes my soul.
This morning my boyfriend and I were lying in bed and he was petting Layla and I just HAD to take a photo of her soaking it up.
I have two dogs, both rescues, one I brought home from the county shelter 5 years ago and this one, Layla, who I brought back during a “Freedom Ride” for Frosted Faces.
The unconditional love we get from our pets is truly a FEEL GOOD experience and it’s also a great source of comfort and companionship for me.
If you don’t have the option of having your own pet, volunteering is the next best thing. Lots of people say “it’s too heartbreaking” to volunteer but every little bit of love and time helps these precious creatures feel loved and safe. And in giving that to them, it can help us feel loved and safe as well. 😍🐾
