Early this morning, the Federation of Gay Games contacted us with the unwelcomed and unexpected news that San Diego was not selected as one of the three cities moving forward for consideration to host the 2026 Gay Games.

While we know the remarkable people in San Diego's LGBTQ+ community and so many community leaders, supporters and friends would have helped us produce an exceptional world-class event, the decision has been made and we have to move on. The cities still vying to be named the host city are Munich, Valencia and Guadalajara. We wish them all luck in the coming months as they continue on with their bids.

On behalf of the Gay Games San Diego 2026 Task Force we wish to express our most sincere appreciation and gratitude to each and every committee member, volunteer, generous donor and adviser for helping us get to this point. We shared a journey that brought together a great and diverse group of people who worked together and truly raised our perceptions and beliefs about who we are and what we stand for. This will be the legacy of our effort.

With our thanks and love,

Jerry Buckley, Co-Chair
Martha Henderson, Co-Chair

Gay male hockey players are coming out in droves, and changing the sport’s culture 31/12/2020

Barriers were broken this year in the macho-fueled world of men’s ice hockey. A slew of players came out, and with each announcement, showed gay people belong on the ice. Hockey is in the midst of a cultural reckoning, with out and proud LGBTQ players leading the way.

Gay male hockey players are coming out in droves, and changing the sport’s culture Many gay male hockey players and officials came out on Outsports this year. They’re making the sport more inclusive.

Congratulations to Hig Roberts as he comes out into his true and authentic self. Hig’s story and honesty makes it easier and helps inspire others to be more comfortable with who they are regardless of who they love.

Today is the day we remember and mourn those we lost to AIDS and hold close to our hearts.

Tom Waddell, an Olympian and the founder of the Gay Games in San Francisco in 1982, is one of the many we lost. Remembering those is also an important element of the Gay Games with the Quilt Exhibition, the Names Project Memorial Ceremony and the Rainbow Memorial events.

"Gay Games 2 San Francisco - Waddell knew his days were numbered. He checked himself out of the hospital and marched in the opening ceremonies holding hands with Lewinstein and Jessica.
Waddell delivered a stirring opening address as part of the Games, which attracted some 3,500 athletes from 17 countries. In one final feat of athletic strength, he managed to win the gold medal in the javelin.

Within a year, he was gone."
