You have to start building trust with Homeowners even before they become clients. Trust starts from the beginning and continues to develop every step along the way.

Recruiting has to be seen not as a project but as a process that should be continuously undertaken in a construction business. Build your bench. Consider your employees as an investment in your opportunity to make more money and take on more projects.

The 5th hiring myth that contractors are guilty of is the belief in the so-called “Hiring Fast and Firing Slow” approach. Hiring slow means hiring people with intention while firing fast means letting go of an employee quickly. However, you really can't do that unless you have an ongoing recruiting system.

Contractors CAN hire employees from outside of the industry. During the pandemic, many companies have proven the value of transferable skills. Folks from outside of construction can bring in new perspectives, new ideas and new ways to approach situations and problems. Fresh eyes are a great thing!

Most contractors believe they don't need to hire a recruiting service. A good contractor knows that hiring subcontractors for services when they do not have the resources on hand or when they need additional expertise can be more beneficial for their business in terms of cost, quality and efficiency.

Another Hiring myth that Contractors are guilty of is that they see employees as expensive, that's why they don't want to hire people. Employees are an investment that can generate more income for you especially if you've structured your business in such a way that it allows you to take on another project.

Believing you only need to recruit when you need someone fast is something that many contractors are guilty of. You should always be building your bench. You shouldn't just wait until your project manager takes another offer, or gets relocated which will surely catch you off guard. You must be constantly recruiting.

Here's another lesson from the Zen Builder: Your Construction Project is a Prototype
In today's modern world of user friendly software the consumer's ability to customize-modify-change-and visualize what they want to buy is really common. Ikea provides their buyers the opportunity to build entire rooms online--complete with drawn to scale furniture, fixtures, and artwork. Warby Parker offers digital-try-on of their eyeglass frames--customers get to experience how it feels in both of these examples before they make a buying decision.
Homeowners are customers not used to buying a prototype. And while you may not like to hear it your home construction project is a prototype.
