2.) Our handplanes have a buoyancy that is just above neutral so that they float, yet offer minimal resistance when swimming. They do not float like a surfboard. Instead they rely on the principle of hydrodynamic lift. As speed increases, hydrodynamic lift increases. Surface area and speed are the two main factors that enable the bodysurfer to achieve and maintain lift - imagine how a rock skips across the water’s surface. As the surfer slides down and across the face of the wave he or she gains speed.

3.) What size should I use? Generally speaking, the larger and steeper the wave, the more potential there is for speed and therefore less planing surface is needed. The converse is true for smaller waves with less power, where more surface area is needed to maintain trim. We say for smaller surf use a larger handplane and in larger surf use a smaller handplane.
