A Crohn’s disease sufferer asked to use a Starbucks bathroom. He was denied, but that’s illegal - The Boston Globe
🙏 Stephen Marcus for sharing your humiliating story of what life can be like for some living with Crohn's. Your transparency and vulnerability are admirable and inspiring.
Because, sometimes, when you gotta go, you gotta go - NOW.
A good day can turn to a sh*tty day for seemingly no apparent rhyme or reason - particular for those living with IBD.
Starbucks - What happened here? A good number of your clients have this, and other "invisible diseases". This is not cool nor justified. Bottom line, it's crappy and smells funky.
United States law supports bathroom access this, and you even had a physician signed card showing your IBD condition and referring to the bathroom rule.
The Tremont and Boylston store is next to the Boston Visitors Center and on the Bostom Common. I sure hope this isn't a common occurrence for you and your staff and customers.
Would the nearby Starbucks Boston Quincy Market have acted in the same manner? Starbucks ?
Personally, I'm grateful for your bathrooms and have been fortunate to have used them in various locations when needed, both in a normal situation and in an emergency. You literally have saved my underwear and jeans from being a hot mess. For this, I thank you deeply, as do my friends and family from those days as you were able to be a superhero and save the day allowing us to continue normally and not be derailed by a normal human body function.
But here's the thing, IBD is a growing epidemic, and not everyone with IBD has a same or even similar experience.
Many actually . Yes, fully grown adults sometimes need to wear Diapers just to be able to leave their home, I'm not sure if you knew that.
Per Dr David Brady IBD is a modern epidemic: "The best estimates of incidence of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in US at the turn of the century in 1900 was about 1 in 10:000 individuals. Today it’s one in 250"
Sadly, that rate is increasing at roughly 15% per year. With children being diagnosed at a rate never seen before in history.
This is your next-generation, Starbucks. This is who you would like to be your loyal customers in the future.
However when you do stupid things like this , and more so, denied Stephen's extremely reasonable and selfless request for no monetary reward, but simple assistance to help public awareness campaign on bathroom-access laws, including displaying decals at their stores - you make me want to encourage our global One Great Gut, Joel Sprechman community of those with IBD Crohn's and Colitis, many who love coffee, to protest outside your stores in the 55 countries we shop and live in. You make me want to rattle the cage and alert groups like Boycott Starbucks
Last year you denied two black men in Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, and now a white attorney in Boston who calmly told, and provide evidence, of his condition to your employees.
Who's next?
Asians?
Native Americans?
Pregnant mothers?
The Handicapped in a wheelchair?
I hope not.
I truly hope the next person suffering from IBD Crohn's Colitis doesn't have an accident inside your store while sipping on their Barbie Pink Frappuccino.
I'm not the best with color matching and stuff, but my gut instinct tells me that this color combination would look good on you.
Love,
Joel
A Crohn’s disease sufferer asked to use a Starbucks bathroom. He was denied, but that’s illegal - The Boston Globe
The law mandates immediate access to restrooms for sufferers of inflammatory bowel disease, but that’s not what happened at one Starbucks outlet in Boston.

IBD ranks as 1 of the 5 most expensive GI disorders despite its being the lowest in prevalence among the list of GI disorders. - One Great Gut
Inflammatory bowel disease patients have higher health costs.
Average annual costs were 3x compared to non-IBD and out-of-pocket costs like co-payments and deductibles were 2x, annually.
I wish more people understood this.
Including family, friends, doctor’s offices, hospital finance departments, and debt collectors.

Merck Created Hit List to "Destroy," "Neutralize" or "Discredit" Dissenting Doctors
Please include Merck researchers, sales team and executives in your prayers. Their souls are in need.
Merck made a "hit list" of doctors who criticized Vioxx, according to testimony in a Vioxx class action case in Australia. The list, emailed between Merck employees, contained doctors' names with the labels "neutralise," "neutralised" or "discredit" next to them.
One email said:
We may need to seek them out and destroy them where they live ...
"Even worse were allegations of Merck damage control by intimidation," he wrote, ... "This has happened to at least eight (clinical) investigators ... I suppose I was mildly threatened myself but I never have spoken or written on these issues."
Merck announces it will pay $4.85 billion to end thousands of lawsuits over its painkiller Vioxx. The amount, to be paid into a so-called settlement fund, is believed to be the largest drug settlement ever.
Merck is also the manufacturer of numerous vaccines
