Captured at Waimea Bay during massive surf in 1976, as featured in Tubular Swells, a legendary lineup of surfers battling heavy Hawaiian waves. Shaun Tomson finished 6th, Reno Abellira 5th, Jeff Hakman 4th, ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew 3rd, Ian Cairns 2nd, and Mark Richards claimed victory with that unforgettable winning smile.

What made it even more remarkable was the dominance of the Australian surfers, taking the top three spots in some of the most challenging conditions Hawaii could offer. An incredible achievement considering they came from the comparatively smaller waves of the Gold Coast and Western Australia, proving true talent rises anywhere.

🌊 Eddie Aikau - More Than a Surfer, A True Hawaiian Legend,

was not just one of the greatest big-wave surfers of his era, he was a symbol of courage, aloha, and selflessness.

Born in Hawaii, Eddie became famous for riding massive waves at Waimea Bay when many were too afraid to paddle out. But beyond surfing, he was respected even more as a lifeguard. During his years at Waimea Bay, he rescued hundreds of people and never lost a single life under his watch.

In 1978, Eddie joined the traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokule‘a on a journey between Hawaii and Tahiti. When the canoe capsized in rough seas, Eddie made the ultimate sacrifice, paddling into the open ocean on his surfboard to search for help for his crew. He was never seen again.

His bravery and spirit turned him into a Hawaiian hero. Today, the phrase “Eddie Would Go” represents fearless determination and stepping up when others won’t.

Every time giant waves arrive at Waimea Bay, surfers and fans remember Eddie Aikau, a man whose legacy became bigger than surfing itself. 🤙🌊
