Art of Judo

Segmented and classified into three primary groups of techniques: Nage Waza (Throwing), Katame Waza (Grappling) and Atemi Waza (Striking), which is only used in self defense applications, Judo addresses training in a well structured manner. Body control (Taisabaki) and foot movement (Shintai) are also essentials built into the system along with setting up your opponent (Tsukuri) with efficient application of technique (Kake).

This purest combination of means is what Judo strives to be. Through vigorous training and astute discipline, one can not only achieve great fighting skills, but also in turn gain an enormous amount of self-awareness, confidence and respect for oneself. It is an everyday art form that lives and breaths in everyone who is touched by it.

Judo in its purest form transcends the ‘sport’ aspect that has at times over shadowed the martial art itself.

Judo is such a dynamic sport that makes it very hard to train for just one certain component. We need a lot of different styles of fitness covering all energy systems. Some opponents are all about speed so the fight is based around aerobic fitness while others are slow and all strength so the fight then spills over into the anaerobic category.

Senior Ranks
These ranks are for students seventeen and older, and for a select group of teenagers who merit being promoted to a senior rank because of physical maturity and/or superior Judo ability. The senior promotion system consists of the following Kyu and Dan ranks:

Participation in competition for seniors is encouraged but is not a requirement for promotion. Juniors who have transitioned to the senior promotion system will still have to fulfill the one tournament per promotion requirement. Since tournament experience has a profound effect on overall performance, competitors can expect to be promoted more frequently than non-competitors. Candidates for black belt promotions are encouraged to direct their efforts toward developing, in addition to a well-rounded technical background, an emphasis of study in any one of the following fields:
Coaching (coaching and certification required)
Competition (any level)
Club administration (board or committee member)
Officiating (tournament officiating and certification required)

Junior Ranks

These ranks are for children between five and seventeen. At the discretion of the coach, some teenagers may be promoted to a senior rank before the age of seventeen.

There is no minimum age requirement for junior ranks. Participation in one tournament is required for each promotion. This is usually fulfilled by attending one of our in-house tournaments or another informal tournament. We will encourage our most promising students to participate in sanctioned tournaments. Since tournament experience has a profound effect on overall performance, competitors can expect to be promoted more frequently than non-competitors.
