☆The first is a deeper variation of pigeon pose/king pigeon 🐦👑 #ekapadarajakapotasana using the surface of a table.
Pigeon is a wonderful hip opener, it releases tension in the low back/hip/glute area where many carry tension. I try to keep in mind as I lean forward to bring my 🖤 heart 🖤 forward, not my head. A good cue is bringing the heart to the knee or shin, head up and a soft gaze forward, open chest. 3 breaths.
It is important to know that this is not a friendly pose for hip or knee injuries. I'll be doing easier variations in a future video.
☆Next is another variation of one legged forward fold #janusirsasana. This is typically done on the floor with one leg in, one extended out again reaching your heart to your ankle or knee. Here the foot and lower leg are on the table for the forward fold. Soft bend in your knees. Again, keeping that chest open and focusing bringing your heart forward, then dropping the head.
3 breaths here.
☆Last is one of my favorite shoulder openers. You can do this facing a wall or seated on a chair as well, but you won't get as much range as if you were bent forward. Any stretching is good stretching.
Facing the table, bend forward placing your elbows on the edges. As you bend forward allow your elbows to bend, to your comfort level, and focus on trying to tap in between the shoulder blades. Again 3 breaths here. Release the arms by extending them forward, stand slowly as you inhale and go live your best life🤸♀️

By opening up your FRONT
Bolsters, rolled towels/blankets, firm couch cushions, pillows etc... are so helpful for home care. Have some at home?
Get them out! Use these tools as this is a great way to release upper, mid and low back pain. Many of us are sitting throughout the day, especially at work, so this position is the best way to release that pain from too much front-of-the-body work.
Placing bolsters, blankets or pillows in various places under the back can help reset that tension that often 'pulls' towards the front body, creating that slouched shape in the neck and shoulders. Spending a few mintues a day in this opposing position will help relax the body, just lay there and breathe: placed under the shoulders will stretch the chest and neck, placed under your mid back will stretch the torso into a mini backbend opening the space between your lungs and ribs, and placed lower on your back will help release the hips/low back. This is just a portion of the free info I share with all clients when they see me for massage and private yoga instruction. ♠️ What am I doing here?
I'm using a #theraloop to challenge my shoulders through changing #rotatorcuffmuscle demands.
Keeping my hands apart creates a base abduction resistance, while the changing direction means that the muscles maintaining joint congruency and control have a more complex task.
My key goal is to try to keep my hands at a close to constant distance apart (which you'll note I found fairly difficult). This looks pretty simple; it's not very easy though.
♦️ Why does this matter?
Our daily needs aren't simply single-vector movements. We change direction, and throughout even a simple movement we see changes in #neuromuscular demands.
As our shoulder changes position, so too does our muscle activity in order to maintain control.
Stability comes from the whole complex, this exercise aims to train stability of the scapula while challenging controlled mobility at that ball and socket.
It's also a fantastic workout finisher 😁
♥️ So what can we do?
We can train our capacity to stabilize in movement.
The above video is a great example of a simple movement to challenge the capacity of the #rotatorcuff during movement, and provides a great way to build overhead tolerance and shoulder safety.
