The Holiday Season is in full swing and we are being inundated by propaganda from political candidates, from both ends of the spectrum, as well as, the media. All of which are capitalizing upon recent terrorist attacks to ingratiate themselves to the electorate, at the expense of Wounded Warriors.

Apropos their hypocrisy, none of the front-running candidates has served their country - or experienced the consequences of the traumatic experiences that are endemic to the “Boots on the Ground” remedies they are pontificating to foist themselves upon the voters and garner votes.

Where pray tell; are the advocates for the Gallant Souls and Wounded Warriors who continue to sacrifice Life, Limbs and Emotional Stability by filling the “Boots” of which the political candidates, media and pundits speak?

Paradoxically, these Gallant Heroes reside over, under and around us, however their plight goes unnoticed during the Holiday Season - but for utilizing their heroic deeds for the political propaganda, advertising enticements and media coverage.

There is no dispute regarding the extreme rise in reported combat veteran (“Hero”) suicides, since Iraq and Afghanistan. Estimates range from between 22 and 30 Heroes who join their comrades at Arms in Valhalla each day or - the fact that 57,000 Veterans go Homeless every night!

Sadly, the political candidates, DOD, V.A., Families and Employers of these Heroes seem to be clueless as to what needs to be done to ameliorate their Demons !

If you wish to, “Talk the Talk” then “Walk the Walk” by spreading Holiday Cheer amongst Heroes this Holiday Season by reaching out to one or more of the 57,000 Homeless Veterans ( many of which suffer from physical and emotional challenges) and showing Combat Vets the respect to which they are entitled.

An Albert Camus quote seems apropos the mindset of our Heroes:

“Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend.”
Happy Holidays from several generations of Combat Vets!

The year 2014 marks the 70 year Anniversary of World War II. Although myriad celebrations have accentuated the anniversary of - last war we actually won - I would be remiss if I failed to pay tribute to 86 year old, Bill Landry - our oldest challenged athlete - for his service in both World War II ( 1944-1945) as well as, Korea (1950-1952), in this years Holiday message.
Many of our World War II Warriors. have been remembered ( personally and posthumously). However, it is an honor to make special mention of Bill, because he recently admitted that “Demons” continue to permeate his mind - as well as, the minds of combat veterans who witnessed and/ or - participated in hostilities during World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan! The Demons of which we speak, become memories of the experiences that led to the loss of our comrades at arms.
Notwithstanding, the Holiday Season is a period of compassion, healing and humanity towards those who have served our country during some of the most horrific events of humanity.
Admittedly, a “less than human" mindset seems to have been omnipresent in the minds of those of us who acted likewise - the name of - “Duty and Honor”. The terms “Duty and Honor” are an intrinsic feeling in which courage, dedication and dignity are a part.

Several generations of combat veterans outwardly express feelings of Survivor Guilt and Remorse over the loss of the “Family Members” with whom we served - and have entered Valhalla before us.
Show your compassion and appreciation to every generation of combat veteran during this Holiday Season by sharing; (1) a few morsels of your Christmas goodies, (2) volunteering to dispense Holiday cheer, (3) paying tribute at Veterans Centers, Events and Homes or (4) simply empathizing with the homeless souls who are still fighting their Demons alone!

Thanksgiving Message:

President George Washington proclaimed the first nation-wide Thanksgiving celebration in America marking November 26, 1789, "as a Day of Public Thanksgiving” to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts of the sacrifices made by the Wounded Warriors who helped to create our country.

As you ponder over your Black Friday shopping list, ask Not - whether you should engorge yourself with another helping of turkey, stuffing or pumpkin pie. Ask Rather - whether to Invite a Combat Veteran to share your dinner or serve them at Veterans homeless shelter.

Send a message to my brothers and sisters at arms who are fighting the demons of Thanksgiving past and present: Don't Hate - Meditate”. Moreover, try to be mindful that We live in the Land of the Free - Because of the Sacrifices of the Brave

Veterans Day Salute

Veterans Day was created on November 11, 1918, the day fighting ceased in what was called; “the war to end all wars”. An armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on that date.

Grunts and other boots on the ground, warriors who served in WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan and other combat zones - know that armistice did not “end all wars”.

The following Teddy Roosevelt quote articulates feelings which are apropos the courage that motivates Grunts as well as, the spirit of Veterans Day and the Marines whose Birthday we celebrate today.
It is not the critic who counts;
not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.

The Credit belongs to Those who are Actually in the Arena,
whose Faces are Marred by Dust and Sweat and Blood.

Those who strive valiantly and come up short again and again.
Those who who know great enthusiasms and devotions.
Those who spend themselves in a worthy causes and know
the triumph of high achievement.

Those who Fail While Daring Greatly, so their place Shall
Never Be With Those Cold and Timid Souls Who Know
Neither Victory or Defeat.

The courage and gallantry of which TR spoke has been manifested by several generations of Grunts and Wounded Warriors. Many of those gallant warriors have transformed themselves into Challenged Athletes, in order to mollify the demons that inhabit our minds. Take a break from shopping today and show your appreciation of their Service, Sacrifices and Determination by hugging a Grunt today!

FOURTH OF JULY MESSAGE:
Independence Day is one of the important American holidays in the history of our country. Not because it is a day off during which we exhibit theStars and Stripes, shop at Home Depot, expand our girths by munching on hotdogs and swilling beer.
But rather, a time for us to pay tribute to the legions of Combat Veterans - both Living and Departed - who sacrificed their lives, limbs and emotional stability, because they believed the preservation of our Way of Life was worth their sacrifices!
Take a break from your holiday festivities, partaking of gourmet delights, libations and pony rides, in order to thank these noble warriors for exhibiting Courage under Fire. Than try to empathize with the traumatic experiences which are the source of the emotional triggers, substance abuse and nightmares endemic to every generation of Combat Veterans.
By so doing, it will speak volumes on your compassion and patriotism. Moreover, it may help to mollify the Demons that dwell inside the minds of these gallant souls.
And, most importantly - Hug a Combat Grunt and wish him or her a Happy Fourth Of July !!!!

Greetings and Salutations everyone,
This weeks Adaptive Yoga Adviser speaks to utilizing the breathing poses and meditation techniques we have learned through our practice of Adaptive Yoga as a way in which to reach out and touch the soul of anyone who manifests rude behavior, anxiety, depression or self-loathing. Moreover, please be mindful that compassion provides us with a path towards transforming such feelings into a present state of equanimity.
To that end, be compassionate as you indulge us by tolerating yet another reminder that Adaptive Yoga led by Pat Frega and Zumba inclusive with Lis Garces sessions will resume on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) facility which is located at 9591 Waples Street, San Diego, CA 92121.
Lis will start Tuesday’s Zumba inclusive session at 4:30 p.m. (1630 hours) and continuing until approximately 5:15 p.m (1715 hours) after which Pat will lead the Adaptive Yoga session commencing at 5:30 p.m. (1730 hours) and continuing until approximately 7:00 p.m (1900 hours).

Re: Adaptive Yoga Cancellation:
Greetings and Salutations,
Saturday’s session of Adaptive Yoga and Zumba will be canceled, in order to allow us to honor the passing of fellow combat veteran and beloved Hall of Fame broadcaster Jerry Coleman. Jerry won four World Series titles as a player with the New York Yankees and interrupted his pro career to fly as a Marine Corps pilot in World War II and Korea. The cancellation will also allow those of us who wish to pay our respects to Jerry the opportunity to attend the public memorial service which will be held at Petco Park for this true American Hero.
Cancellation notwithstanding, Samuel Nehemiah - Mr. “Don’t Worry-Be Happy” - will be greeting the Rollers and Walkers wheelchair dance class led by Beverly Weurding and Joe Torres, as their CAF host.
Adaptive Yoga, Zumba and complimentary chiropractic adjustment sessions will resume at 1600 hours (4:00 p.m.) on Tuesday January 21, 2014 with Dr. Steve Ronco rendering complimentary chiropractic adjustments until 1730 hours (5:30 p.m). Zumba led by Lis Garces will commence at 1630 hours (4:30 p.m), followed by Adaptive Yoga at 1700 hours (5:00 p.m.) led by Tami Ridley and Pat Frega.
On the following Saturday, January 25, 2014, Samuel Nehemiah - Mr. “Don’t Worry-Be Happy” - will be greeting us with his award winning Smile, as he hosts the festivities. Saturday’s session will mark the return of the Rollers and Walkers wheelchair dance class led by Beverly Weurding and Joe Torres, as well as Adaptive Zumba and Yoga.

Happy New Year!

Kudos one and all, we have made it into the year 2014. However, the question now becomes; whether we are going to focus our awareness upon, the past, future or present during this upcoming year?

Empirical studies have established that patiently practicing Mindfulness, as a part of Adaptive Yoga practice will ameliorate our pain, anxiety, depression and stress, as well as, ultimately leading to a more satisfying existence.

Mindfulness is a natural consequence of the breathing we have been introduced to and have been trying to perfect during the year 2013. Moreover, you do need to be within the confines of CAF or PHP, in order to practice Mindfulness.

When feelings of angst, depression or pain begin to overwhelm you simply find yourself a comfortable place in which to relax. Than focus your awareness upon your breath by Inhaling Fully - and - Exhaling Completely!

Thoughts will most assuredly come as you breathe, don’t allow them to interfere with the rhythm of your breath and continue to focus your awareness upon the anxiety, depression or pain your are seeking to resolve. Try to focus your awareness upon the challenges you are currently facing and avoid thoughts of dealing with past transgressions and future illusions.

Allow us to also remind you that the complimentary chiropractic adjustments, Adaptive Zumba and Yoga sessions will resume onTuesday, January 7, 2014 at the Challenged Athletes Foundation “CAF” facility.

The sessions will resume at 1600 hours (4:00 p.m.) with Dr. Steve Ronco rendering complimentary chiropractic adjustments until 1730 hours (5:30 p.m). Zumba led by Lis Garces will commence at 1630 hours (4:30 p.m), followed by Adaptive Yoga at 1700 hours (5:00 p.m.) led by Tami Ridley and Pat Frega.
