On Friday, Youth Systems Director David Baker and Association Director of Community Engagement and Belonging Justin Lipford headed down to Chula Vista. They marched to the Border View YMCA to complete the last portion of their 125-mile Solidarity Journey to bring awareness to the issue of youth homelessness. They met up with educators, old friends, partners, and community members to help lift each other and provide support for all the young people in San Diego experiencing homelessness.
Homelessness isn't just about having a roof over your head. It's about finding community, stability, and peace of mind.
Together, we are doing that, and we will continue to do that until we .
Thank you, David and Justin, for leading the way and bringing us all together to support and uplift young people facing homelessness because everyone deserves the chance to find a safe and stable home.
And our work isn’t done here. This is a year-round issue that requires support and solutions year-round. Continue to fight, support, and donate to help create more opportunities and offer resources such as job training, mental health services, and affordable housing options for our youth in San Diego.

This past Sunday, our volunteer youth soccer coaches were recognized during the San Diego Loyal Soccer Match at halftime. Each coach received a framed certificate and SD Loyal Warm-Up Jersey with their name on the back. We are grateful for our partnership with SD Loyal and their efforts to recognize the importance of our YMCA volunteers and we thank our volunteer coaches for stepping up to teach our youth and strengthen our community! 🤝🫶

YMCA San Diego board chair Bill Geppert and his wife Amy are riding across America to raise money for the Challenged Athletes Foundation and the Y, and they're just a couple of days away from wrapping up their ride! 🚴♂️🚴♀️ They've cycled over 2,700 miles, averaging 55 miles per day with less than 300 miles to go to the finish line on the east coast! Their mission is to raise awareness and funding for the Challenged Athletes Foundation, and all funds will go to CAF grants and our San Diego Y program, which provides free sponsored memberships to all CAF families at our Y branches! Gone but never forgotten. Impactful YMCA leader, Dick Webster has passed away.
With great sadness, we share Dick’s passing on September 25, 2022, after a long, courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Dick is a legend at our Y, known for his innovative ideas, fundraising and volunteer development, and strong leadership skills. He had a long career in the Y movement throughout the US, but his proudest work was at the Mission Valley YMCA as the Vice President/Executive Director from 1989 to his retirement. He had a passion for fundraising and community outreach, evident with some of Mission Valley’s programs and facilities still strengthening our community today. Dick was instrumental in constructing Mission Valley YMCA’s outdoor pool, Krause Family Skate Park, facility expansions and renovations, and the construction of the Toby Wells Family YMCA. Dick also developed several programs for youth and adults that were adopted by Ys nationally, such as our PRYDE program. We are so thankful for Dick and his dedication to our Y and those we serve. We hope he left this world onto the next with the pleasure of knowing his legacy at our YMCA will continue long into the future. 🤍
