Some heavy Back Squats from earlier this week - workout was 3 x 2 @ 85%. This was my last set at 385 - legs were nice and sore next couple days. Training has returned to just group classes 4-5 x week, which is about all I’ve got capacity for the time being :)

I still can’t put words to last weeks and what an honor it was to compete among the fittest in the men’s 40-44 age group.
Thank you for reaching out and making this interview happen. Hard to take 15-20 minutes of conversation and condense it into a short article but you all did a great job of doing so.
If you haven’t read the article, make sure you head over to Morning Chalk Up. Lastly, I want to give a shoutout for finding me, taking the time to listen to my story and putting this article together.
You are exactly what the community is all about - after you interviewed me, I got to ask you a few questions and found out you were just 17 years of age and been doing CF for 10 years.
As I told you, I hope my daughter is inspired by young women like you that are pursuing their dreams at such an early age. Not letting anything or anyone stopping them for going after what they want in their lives. Thank you for being that example for her and many others!

It was a successful CrossFit Games for ten-time Games athlete Nuno Costa, finishing the week taking home a first-place event finish and becoming the 6th fittest man in the 40-44 division. His career spans a decade of competing at the Games, mostly with CrossFit Invictus.
But Costa’s adversity had less to do with his fitness and more to do with finding a sense of belonging.
Costa found a home with CrossFit after struggling with addiction and going through recovery. Much of his addiction stemmed from when he decided to come out as gay.

Day 1 in the books
Event 1 was 4.5 mile run - we were delayed about an hour due to weather then sun came out and it was blazing warm for our run. Laps 1-3 felt good, laps 4-6 hang on for dear life.
Event 2 - Legless Rope Climbs (20’) and Heavy DL @ 345 x 5 for 5 rounds. That rope was no joke - almost didn’t make the 4th climb, slowed down a bit for the last one to make sure I had enough in the tank to get to the top. Super fun event - very hard.
Event 3 - 6 minutes to find 1 RM sn**ch. Did not start the way I wanted to - missed 195 twice, went down to 185 - took some deep breaths, calmed my nerves and hit that, then 202, 212 and 222. Went for 227 at the buzzer, had it overhead ran forward and couldn’t stay on the platform and show control. Nonetheless, stoked with my 222 # as that’s a competition PR for me.
Huge thank you to and .amar.costa - they’re the real stars for looking after María all day while daddy competed.

I am really looking forward to getting out on the competition floor tomorrow for the to represent the LGBTQ+ community, the Recovery community, etc…I want to show what Fitness looks like at 40+. I want to go out there and represent being a Single Gay Parent (by choice - hehe), I want to represent and show what its like to be a CrossFitter - hard working, driven humans that care about the well being of one another!
I have been shown so much Love along my journey and my years of competing and I am still blown away at what my body is capable of doing, year after year. I want to represent you - someone that feels they haven’t been represented, I get it. I used to feel like I didn’t belong, like I wasn’t a part of - CrossFit changed all that for me!
Over the next three days, I am going out and doing the best that I can - who cares where I end up on the leaderboard. If you’re in Madison, come up and say hello! I appreciate you, your support and you being here to cheer us on. Without the community we would not be here. Let’s go out and have a great week of competition.
