Your workouts & training plan should be boring.
Boring workouts help you shrink the gap between intention and action. You said you’d do it and you did it. Your brain records the win. Helping you go from someone who’s “trying to workout” to someone who works out.
Repetition calms your nervous system by reducing cognitive load & anxiety. Instead of solving another problem you’re giving yourself a repetitive pattern, patterns feel safe.
Simple & boring workouts lower your mental load, you already how to do the exercises, you know exactly what to expect effort wise, about how long it’s going to take you which helps you build trust with your body.
Progress happens when you gradually increase load, doing the same exercises week to week lets you see exactly what you did the week before. You can then push a little harder or dial it back if you were too sore the time before.
Boring also means balanced, you’re not going to overtrain and therefore increase your chance of injury if you’re following a plan. I typically do legs Monday, upper body Wednesday and full body Friday, or if I can only do 2 days I do a push day and a pull day.
Will you get bored? Maybe, but you’ll also reduce the power of your excuses.
I have an autopilot workout format, I’ll pick one exercise for each: push, pull, squat, & hinge.
Maybe that’s: bench press, bent row, back squats & trap deadlifts or maybe it’s pushup, inverted row, bodyweight squats and good mornings.
So do the boring workout. Anywhere. Anytime. Prove to yourself that this is a habit worth building for LIFE. Not just something you do occasionally.
If you’re bored of your workout routine try adding a new playlist, going for a run on a different route, trying a new class or meeting a different friend for a walk in their neighborhood.
Boredom builds character💪and strong muscles.
