There were a couple DW team members who coached novice teams for NCIDBF, and our very own Janet Leung was CDBA Novice Coordinator!
Bryan Wong coached and steered for KPMG. According to him, the highlight of the experience was “helping Janet put together a novice team on just a couple weeks notice. Coaching allows me to share the sport with others. Building trust and relationships [was] also rewarding. Motivating a diverse group and unlocking their potential is definitely stimulating. KPMG was able to handle every challenge and finished Second in Novice Finals!”

Jasper Hua was the primary coach for Webcor. He said that he enjoyed “teaching people the sport and seeing them learn to work together and paddle. Their happy faces at the end of every race is the most rewarding part.”

What a fun time in Portland! We had great local hosts (The Castaways), and even got adopted by Portland Fire.
We fought on the water for every race against some pretty tough competition. Some accomplishments we achieved at the Portland Dragon Boat Festival:
SFDW Mixed – finished #11 out of 28
Comp C Final 3rd 02:18.49
SFDW Masters – finished #4 out of 5
Masters Final 4th 02:11.48
SFDW Open – Finished #4 out of 7
Open Final 4th 02:05.04
Stowaway (DW Women) – finished #24 out of 32
Women F final 4th 02:30.71
Castaway from SFO – finished #3 out of 5
Pride Cup (Open) 3rd 02:11.69
Keep inspiring each other. Keep pushing. It’s time to finish out the season strong for Norcal and Nationals.

Catalina Crossing Success! 🏆🌊
HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Tek, Eri, and our Dragon Warriors alumni who absolutely crushed the legendary Catalina Race on September 6th!
These dual-club paddlers represented both Dragon Warriors and Kilohana Outrigger from Redwood City in the Open Coed division, securing a hard-fought 2nd place finish in an incredible 3:51:16!
Talk about a nail-biter. It was just one minute separating them from 1st place and another minute cushion over 3rd, this was an all-out 30-mile battle from Newport Beach to Catalina Island that had everyone on the edge of their seats! 🔥
But here's the story that gives us all the feels: This wasn't just any crew - 5 couples made up this boat! Imagine the trust, communication, and teamwork required when you're not just racing with your teammates, but with your life partner through 30 miles of open ocean. That's next-level connection right there! 💕
What made this performance even more special:
- Sub-4 hour crossing time (that's FAST!)
- Fantastic crew chemistry under pressure
- Representing two incredible paddling communities
- Proving that love and competition make an unbeatable combination
This crew's success showcases what happens when paddlers bring together Dragon Warriors heart and Kilohana experience - pure magic on the water!
Drop a 🔥 in the comments to celebrate this amazing achievement!
