The Kombos Collective presents the critically acclaimed Uproot, a powerful program of Greek songs from Asia Minor. In collaboration with rembetiko interpreter Katerina Clambaneva, the ensemble performs modern arrangements of Greek music from the region, celebrating this vibrant musical heritage and capturing the refugee experience through song. Uproot weaves histories and personal stories throughout, generating a universal dialogue about the impact of forced migration and building a bridge to the experience of modern-day refugees.

Great Vardari show at the Cheeseboard tonight! We have a few new tunes in our setlist, including the Roma folk tune "Logia Kleidomena/Ramo Ramo" and a contemporary tune "Dinata Dinata," which also has pop versions in Turkish and Serbian. Shoutout to for sitting in on clarinet.

Vardari song spotlight: Hasapikohora 🎻🪈

The melody in Hasapikohora is originally a Romanian hora. This arrangement draws from George Enescu’s “Romanian Rhapsody No. 1” for orchestra and also a Greek hasapiko from Constantinople: “Karotseri Trava,” which means “Hurry, Coachman.” Klezmer king Naftule Brandwein recorded it in 1924 as part of a medley of tunes under the title “Das Teureste in Bukowina.” The arrangement mashes up all three versions of this hasapiko+hora and is primarily a flute and violin feature meant to show off the players' virtuosic range.
