Rayos Magos Art

MERCADO CALIFORNIA: is a new body of work inspired and influenced by my California Chicano Mexican roots. The work continues exploring the theme of rediscovering precolonial Mesoamerican culture and reclaiming cultural identity in a contemporary world. The work uses storytelling in the form of contemporary codices infused with ancestral guidance and wisdom around life topics. The mix of prehispanic symbolism and contemporary iconography tells a story of being Chicano, living in an intermediary place and finding a voice in sociopolitical times bent on division and separation. My ultimate goal is to share the work which represents me, my culture, my community and where I come from. Home of the lowriders, Chicano soul, G-Funk, and Westcoast vibes, Bay Area hustle culture, and authenticity at its finest. Essentially the work is an honoring the past, the present and the future. “Tortillas de Maíz” is an acrylic painting I made back in September 2025 for my solo show Ancestral Download in October 2025 in San Francisco. The subject matter of this series of work encompasses influence of past Mesoamerican codices, personal travels to Mexico, images of people in the streets, iconography and symbols that recreate a new story. Day 14: my final day at Gibraltar Point artist residency. It was bittersweet to pack up all my belongings. For two weeks the Toronto Islands felt like home. Having friends come visit made it seem like I never left. Being able to spread out and make 8 new paintings was magical! I explored almost every inch of the islands and still didn’t see it all. I swam a lot in Lake Ontario which is rejuvenating and healing. Even got to swim last night before heading out. I really enjoyed being in nature, which reminded me of my Californian life back home. All in all this was a sweet chapter to kick off the summer! Catch the new work this Aug 1st in Chicago for my solo show! Day 5: Gibraltar Artist Residency is a great lil respite from the day to day city grind. So far the days are slow but my practice is strong. I’ve already started 5 paintings while here with two more paintings to plan out. Being here gives me a chance to reflect on my life practice and my arts practice. At times I question what I am doing as an artist and where to go next. Perhaps this is just an every person existential question. As an artist I have learned to embrace the uncertainty and the chaos. I have learned to just be with and work out my fears and doubts through a visual format. If you’re seeing my work then you know it’s variations and it’s progressions.
