**WHEN SCHOOLS CROSS THE LINE: WHO SHOULD DECIDE A CHILD’S IDENTITY?**

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools over policies involving transgender students and parental involvement. The DOJ argues that parents have important rights to access their children’s educational records and to be involved in major decisions affecting them.

The school district disputes the allegations and says it is complying with federal law.

But this case raises a bigger question:

**Where should the line be drawn between supporting a student and excluding parents from important decisions about their child?**

Schools exist to educate children—not to replace parents.

Teachers and counselors can provide support, compassion, and protection from bullying. But when issues involving a child's identity become serious and potentially life-changing, parents should not automatically be treated as outsiders.

This debate should not be about hatred toward anyone. It should be about **parental responsibility, transparency, children's welfare, and the proper role of schools.**

Children deserve kindness and respect.

Parents deserve transparency.

And schools should be accountable to both.

**The question isn't whether students deserve support. They do.
The question is: who should have the final responsibility for a child—parents or the school system?**

𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲

No student should be threatened, assaulted, bullied, or sexually harassed. Schools have a responsibility to protect every student — regardless of their identity or beliefs.

But protecting students also means being precise about what the evidence actually proves.

The article points to nearly 400 safety incidents recorded by Scottsdale Unified, including assaults and sexual-harassment cases. Yet the article itself acknowledges that these school records do not identify whether the students involved were LGBTQ+

That distinction matters.

You cannot take a broad collection of bullying and assault records, combine it with separate LGBTQ+ survey statistics, and then present the entire dataset as proof that those hundreds of incidents were attacks against LGBTQ+ students.

There is another limitation: records were requested from four Arizona school districts, but only Scottsdale Unified returned records. That gives us a case study — not a complete picture of Arizona schools.

The right response to violence is not to turn every school-safety problem into an ideological argument.

It is to demand evidence, hold schools accountable when they fail to respond, protect every student equally, and distinguish documented facts from broader political conclusions.

Protect students. Follow the evidence. Challenge failures — without exaggerating what the evidence proves.
